I've got a chance to get a 95 or newer hardtop for free(without glass or rear gate). The parts book says that its different than mine would be and I'm wondering what the differences are and if there's any way it can work?

If it is a YJ top and not a TJ top I don't see why it wouldn't work. I've seen YJ tops on CJ's and CJ tops on YJ's. I guess people use whatever they can find easiest/cheapest. I don't think it would be a problem that the top is newer

It is a YJ top. I've read in past posts that YJ tops up to a 94 will fit on a CJ-7 so there's got to be something different but what is it?

the windows on a yj top are bigger and the liftgate is different, but they do interchange with cj tops

Okay, what's the difference between a (94 and older) and a (95 and newer) top. The old post say to stay away from the 95 and up. The top I can get is a 95 and up top. What's the difference????

I'm not sure about this, but wasn't 95 the year of the TJ switch? The parts book must be refering to TJ hardtops. All YJ hardtops should be the same. All YJ tubs are the same, so any differences should be only cosmetic and shouldn't effect the fit.

There's no such thing as a "95 and up top"...it's either a '95 YJ top or it's a '97 and up TJ top.

yep .. NO 96 jeep, that was the year of the change.. so it is a misprint.. would be 95 and down

Some 95 YJ's have some parts that are from the TJ line. The tailgate hinges I believe are the same as the TJ's (stronger). I'm not sure what other items there are but the hardtop can't be one of them.

The only differences I have seen with the hardtops are there are wipers or there are no wipers.

If you can get a hardtop with a rear wiper, the crap that gets kicked up on the rear window makes it real tough to see out of.
