I stripped down my Waggy D44 today. I have a set of gears and a carrier from a Chevy that I bought for a gear swap. Now that I have everything torn down and sitting next to each other it doesn't look like I bought the right gears. The Waggy had 3.54s and the Chevy had 4.10s. The diameter of the carrier bearings looks different both ID and OD. They are both from 1977 vehicles. Is this just the natural difference betwenn the 3.92 and lower carrier and the 3.92 and up carrier?? Or did I screw up thinking that D44 and Chevy gears were swappable?

I thought the chevys that had a 44 were the same. Was it for a corp 10 bolt? But also like you said, they are different somewhat because of the carriers.
Can you call the manufacture to double check?

The carrier bearings should be the same. Check the race numbers or bearing number to see if they are the same. I think there is only one d44. Now 60's and 70's thats another story.

Im wondering if you didnt get a r&p from a chevy corp 10bolt or 12 bolt.

Not sure why the carrier bearings would be different between two D44 axles. Guess that with dozens of versions out there it is possible (just not that likely).

Did you pop them off and measure them? Maybe just look at the bearing PN#. The outer race may be the same with a different bearing (just guessing).

Per Randy's Ring and Pinion.....
D44 3.73 & down / 3.92 & up #

So it does take a different carriers for the two gear sets that you are looking at.

I am not sure what I have, but I am pretty sure it won't work. If you can help me with the ID, maybe I can resell these.

You're not crazy. That is the basis for this post. I don't know what I have. I was told that the Chevy R&P was from a D44, but I am thinking it was a 10 bolt. I don't have the Chevy axle.

From the pics.... you don't have two D44's to play with... sounds like fun but you need to sell those gears don't ya.... any PN# on them?

Well its not a d44 no doubt and its not a dana gear set either. I kinda thought it was a 60 when i saw the pinion and didnt look at the carrier. Look at the unknown carrier, it has a bolt for the center pin. Bolt means C-clip. With the pinion splines being so big, i would have to say that its probably a GM 12 or baby 14 bolt if it is a GM product at all.

Okay,

Here are the numbers.....

Carrier: GM 34 1252981 (Numbers are in 2 seperate places)
Ring: GM3988514
Pinion: GM3988513

Anyone have a parts reference???

Tom- checked through the GM parts computer at work. The carrier # cannot be located. The ring and pinion numbers supercede to a set # 03988515, currently not available. Listing shows they fit a front axle in a Chev K1,2 4.10 gears, corporate design. Tried to verify by going from application to part #however, and could not. May be because the part is no longer available. Looks like you got corporate 10 bolt front gears there.

Thanks a bunch. I saw some similar numbers for a different ratio on another 10-bolt set on eBay. Now that I know what they are, I can put these on eBay as well.
