i have the opprotunity to get a fairly low mileage 96 4.0 from an xj. This would eventually go into my 92 xj. are there any differences in the computers or sensors, or should it pretty much be plug and play? I don't want to have to do a bunch to make it work. would it matter if one was a manual tranny engine and the other a automatic tranny engine? thanks, ben

I'm gonna take a guess. The only difference between an engine for a man tranny and an auto should be the computer. The calibration will be slightly different. You should be able to use your existing computer and wiring harness but you should check to see if the injectors are different.

OH! I though you wanted to talk about engines but if you just want general comments -

I would double check the exhaust manifolds to make sure that they will match up. look at how the 92 is shaped and take a look at the 96 as well, there might be a difference(maybe). are u using a engine from a manual tranny or a auto, and what is your tranny?

There's also the different TPS and a link to the auto I thought. Try to keep the setup as much as before the swap. Don't try to interchange manual and auto electronics that are claerly different.

the engine I will be swapping for(the 96) was mated to a auto tranny and my engine is mated to a 5 speed manual

the reason I asked is becuase the pilot bearing might mis-match. I installed a engine on my 87 XJ 5-speed I had, and the engine was off an auto-tranny. long story short, I had to have the back of the engine mic'd and drilled out so the pilot bearing sleeve would fit right. not saying the swap won't work, but you might get a lot of headache's. i would stick with a engine from a manual if i were you. i'm sure there are plenty around, start checking junk yards. anyway, good luck!!

I guess I could just use the intake, injectors and computer stuff from my 92 for the 96 if they turned out to be different, huh? Any way I could find out the dimensions on the pilot bearing sizes to see if they are different? The donor engine is still in the vehicle, and I am still driving mine, so we can't set them side by side to measure....thanks again for any ideas,Ben

once you get the donor out you will have to see if the pilot bearing sleeve with fit from your XJ now into the 96 engine. if it does not, i'd take the 96 engine to a machine shop unless you know how to do all that.

i would say yea, just need to strip the 96 down once you get it out if necessary. just make sure everything matches up.....
