I'm going to start looking for a diesel engine for a crawler I'm going to start building here in the next few months.
But I don't have a real good idea of where to start, mainly what kind of cars to pull it out of.
Any assistance or ideas would be great.

If I were you I would look for a Cummins 4BT. I think it is a 3.7L, has really decent power, ridiculously good economy, lots of parts available. I see a lot of them on eBay, some fresh rebuilds, that came out of Frito Lay trucks. I think there are even some that had GM Turbo 400 transmissions bolted to them.

It kind of depends what you plan to play with. There is a CJ10 tug with Nissan 3.3L (non-turbo) on craigslist: seattle-tacoma classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events that's hooked to a 727 and NP208.

I like the 4BT concept, but if you're looking for a lighter alternative with a lot of parts available in the US, the Mercedes diesel swap is an option.

Mark at 4x4Labs seems to be having luck with older Mercedes-Benz diesel engines. He's putting together an affordable kit for doing a conversion.
