Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

I have a 2000 TJ and my check engine light is on. I've read about how there should be a way for me to get a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) to come up on the odometer. I can't seem to find anything about how to do this for my particular year. Anyone out there know?

You have to have a scanner for your model year, the trick for reading the odometer code is only up to I think 96 or 97. After that you gotta go to the shop or by a scan tool $$$$

On my 2005 Ram 3500 if I cycle the key from off to on 3 times and leave it on the 3rd time (do not start the engine) it will flash trouble codes on the odometer. I assume it's probably the same for other Daimler Chrysler vehicles...
