I am planning on running extended vent lines for my axles and transfer case in my 83 CJ7. I have a chevy TH350 tranny, and was
wondering what if anything I need to do to that to protect it from water/mud? What else should I do to the Jeep to protect
everything from water?

The TH350 does have a breather line on it that needs to be extended, If your axles and t-case don't already have them, I'd get some of those "snuffer" valves that go on the end of the line that let air get in and block out mud and some water (I don't think they are submersible though) Does anyone know where you can get these valves? They came stock on my vent lines on my YJ, and one of them is missing.

More water gets in around the dipstick boot on a TH-350 than one might think.
Check to see if it is sealing, or leaking. If it leaks, replace it.

The tranny vent is on the top of the case, just behind the bell housing. Hook a vacuum line on it and extend the vacuum line to above the water line or a protected area.

Check your vacuum modulator line. Heavy mud or water travel will pull these off.
Use a new piece of vacuum line, and use nylon wire ties to secure the hose to the hard line and vacuum module nipple.

If you have a leaking rear mail seal, pan gasket, governor housing, vacuum modulator, or anywhere else wanter can enter, fix it.

Locate axle vents. ALL AXLES HAVE VENTS !
Hook vacuum line or transmission line to them, and run them to a spot above the water line or to a protected area.
Use filters on them.
Replace any differential housing gasket leaks, and any leaking axle tube seals or leaking wheel seals.
Using check valve vents is a good way to screw the pooch...

It might pay to try to make your ignition as water resistant as possible.
I'd also take along a can of dried compressed air or starting fluid.

Good luck... Aaron.

4 Whhel Drive hardware has the plastic vent caps, part# 5352955 listed for 3.99 each.

Did it go together nice and easy? You did something wrong. Will have to do it again./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Ever since I lived in SE AZ and was pulling people out of the Gila River all the time, I have one thing to say about mud and water,
stay out of it, unless you really, really like to do wheel bearings, brakes, and everything else on a regular basis. Of course, that
is just a rock crawler's point of view. /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif

I am not planning on too much mud/water. I just want the Jeep to be prepared for anything I decide to throw at it. Another question, on the front axle (d30) how do you attach a breather hose? I can see where it's supposed to go, but on mine there is just a hole in the pig. Is it missing something? How is it supposed to be set up from the factory?

i agree dont do anything that u do not have to (the less water/deep mud that u are not going to make it, dont attempt), every one has said very good points, just a note that i was going through mud, water, u name it, until i was wheelin with smaller tires (33s they are not a bad size at all) and i went into a mud hole where i used my 40s needless to say i went side ways in the hole and it was one of the worst i had been stuck, but as i was sideways water went in the dipstick holder filled tranny with water,(not relizing at this point) next weekend i went wheeling in some tight trails that are not trails that u would not want to be pulled out of, needless to say my tranny would not move and i was left standed, luckily i was with other people and a called up my friend and brought me fluid and the rest of the guys lunch, courtsy of a tj, and swapped out the fluid right there (and No I DID NOT EVEN MAKE A MESS) i took of the line and dumped it into a gas container, i am redoing the jeep and I am going to stay out of the next to impossible holes,

yes.. at the end of those breather lines.. you need a filter.. i use those CHEAP fuel filters.. they are white plastic.. about 1.50 or so a piece.. i take the line up.. put the filter on it, and then when i bolt the line down.. i turn the filter upside down... make it harder to get water thru it.. if it reaches that high..
one other thing.. use plenty of rtv.. that gasket sealer stuff.. goop that everywhere... seal the distr. dipsticks.. another good thing is an electric fan.. so you can turn it off when you get into the water.. keeps it from going all over your engine.. ie. plugs.. and a bug screen, or some other wire mesh on the front of your jeep grille.. ie. not for bugs.. but to keep mud from building up infront of the radiator.. doesnt take much.. to plug that up.

One thing that hasnt been mentioned yet, which i think might be a good idea, is the modification of the cooling fan for deep water crossings. The stock engine fan, if submersed into water, tends to toss water all over the engine and into the distributor. Funny how that works. Especially on the Ford engines with the distributor in the front...great idea guys...but seriously...You can disconnect the fan bet, if its not a serpentine belt, or you can remove it entirely and switch to an electric fan that you can turn off when in the deep stuff...I have seen stock fans submersed in water, only to come out as part of the radiator as well, so if nothing else, CHECK YOUR CLEARANCES!!!!

Just my 2 cents...
