Dana 44 rear disc brakes

3322 Views 18 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  **DONOTDELETE**
What calipers have a built in parking brake? would the rotors same as the front dana 44s fit the rears with the proper backspacing? then I only need to fab some brackets, and new proportioning valve right? what am I missing?

I can't remember my source, but the list I carry in my wallet /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif (only a jeeper would understand this) /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif, says '79 Cadillac, '79 Lincoln Continental and '95 Ford Explorer.

Hope that helps,

Would that be the parts list tucked right behind the eternal ring maker in your wallet? Just kidding. Please dont take offense. I carry a parts list with me too. I need to keep track of which part came from what vehicle.

circa '79 (I'm sure there's other compatible years) Cadillac Eldorado calipers have the integral parking brake...they're pretty pricey.
Your stock combo valve will be okay but you'll need to replace your master cylinder with one from a 4-wheel disc vehicle (GM for CJ's, Ford for YJ's).
You'll want to use the smaller diameter rotors...may be able to use CJ fronts...they're supposed to work with the caliper brackets that Warn sells. TSM also has caliper brackets (I have these) but I'm not sure if they'll work with rotors other than the ones that they sell...I'll have to do some measuring one of these days.

Jim Weed has a writeup of using the front Scout discs on the rear. The writeup is at http://www.off-road.com/~jweed/discrear.htm. I haven't made the swap yet, but will someday as I have 2 extra sets of Scout axles layong around (under the Scouts). Good luck!

The ones I got are from a 85 eldorado, paid $25 pair at a pick and pull. Now the Izusu Rodeo comes factory with dana 44 and rear disc. It is a six lug but redrill the hubs it would be a factory bolt on.

What do the kits on teh market cost? ballpark is fine..

Im just wondering if its worth doing ( Id probably not buy a kit over $300)
I gave a 9 inch Ford disc brake rear end ( 1979 Lincoln Mark V) to a freind last night, because I didnt figure I could afford the currie High pinion setup, since no one would tell me what it COST...

oh well Dana 44, or AMC 20 it will be...

There's 3 flavors that I'm aware of:
Stainless Steel Brake Corp. @ $600, includes everything like the calipers, hoses, dust shields, etc
Street Rod Manufacturing (TSM) @ $300, this is the one I have...doesn't come with the above mentioned items
Warn @ $90, just the caliper brackets and a chart of what calipers & rotors you can source yourself

I've got one of those Lincoln 9" rears sitting in my garage. Had been trying to find someone to pay me a decent buck for my 44 rear so that I could build up the 9"...I'll have to use it to depreciate it a bit and sell it later.

jeepskate

can you tell me how much teh currie High pinion 3rd member costs?

I was even dreaming of rear coils in that lincoln rear end for KILLER departyre angle!!
!

thanks!

Here is the deal with the TSM set up I used.

The kit basically includes caliper brackets, rotors and nuts and bolts. THat's it. You have to get the calipers from a 85 Eldorado, I got the front ones and don't have an e-brake because the rear calipers don't adapt to jeep cables. Brake lines are interesting because (like the front disc's) there is a rubber line that goes to the "T" on the passenger side and a rubber line to a steel brake line that goes over the diff to the "T". Hope that makes since. Also I had to rethread the caliper centering bolt and rethread the bracket because I couldn't find anything that fit the bracket threads. It was a real PITA and I didn't really save that much over a complete kit. It was $300 for the TSM stuff and another $70 for calipers, pads and brake lines. I guess $370 isn't to bad.

Also I need to get an adjustable proportioning value to distribute more fluid to the rear because the front does most of the work.
A line lock is another thing I need to get to also, I was thinking about using the Mico Lock - http://www.mico.com/

Hope that helps

G
Lee,
R&P sells an adapter to use the dana 44 style parking brake cable with the cadillac or camaro
e-brake calipers. Don't know the cost but give them a call at 503-557-8911. Nickmil.

G
I'll call them and if there at a seasonable price and not as complicated as JEEPN's link sure.

Thx

Well here's an idea if you want to dare to be different. Get a rear axle from a 72-74 Cj5 of even some DJs, this is assuming you still have a narrow 20. Get yourself some spindles off a Wagoneer and have the rear machined flat. If you put these spindles up to the rear flange you'll notice something cool... They bolt right up!!! You can then put on some wagoneer outers or rumor has it TTB Ford and poof instant full float kit with discs. A buddy of mine who did this years back said custom axle shafts set him back $200. Beats the hell out of Warn. You'll need to run a linelock for a parking brake but it's a small sacrifice to make. I'll be trying this out soon myself and I'll let you know how it goes. Happy Jeepin

AZJeeper,
I did the same thing about a year before Warn came out with the ff kit. I used CJ front spindles and machined
the back down but left a raise portion just like stock to center the spindle in the housing. I then had
Dutchman machine build a pair of axle shafts with 27 spline outers and put on Warn ZA bodied hubs.
It works great behind my V-6. I also put on disc brakes at the same time using Scout hubs and rotors
and Wagoneer calipers and brackets. The only down side is the external spline hub which isn't as strong
as the internals like the Warn's and Dutchman won't warranty the axleshafts if you break or twist one
whereas Warn has a lifetime guarantee against breakage. Nickmil.

Dunno...just call Currie. I've got a Scrambler now, so I've got enough wheelbase to not have to worry about the driveline angle /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

The adjustable prop valve will do nothing to solve your problem. You can not dial up the pressure, only dial it down. You need to replace your master cylinder with one from a 4-wheel disc vehicle...'79 Firebird works well for CJ's.

G
AZJeeper,
It's funny you said that because I saw something similar recently.
Wagoneer caliper brackets redrilled to fit the 5 bolts on the axle, have the bracket machined down
to the same spacing as a backing plate, use large CJ rotor that will need to be honed out to fit the
bearings on the axle, remove the studs on the axle and weld front studs into the back of the rotor.
The rotor will go inside the axle shaft and use large GM calipers and pads. That way you don't
have to go FF. Also this was on a narrow trac CJ Dana 44. Sorry if a gave away any secrets but
I which I knew this before I bought TSM because with maching it can be done under $100 4 rear disc's.

That's similar to Rick Boiros' setup...the picture in the Scout section with Jim Weed's IH DIY rear-disc article is actually of Rick's Jeep. I looked at doing this, but decided it was too much BS to go through every time the rotors needed to be removed for servicing or replaced. It'll cost ya' more than $100 to DIY unless someone gives you the parts and you can do the machining yourself. Take a look at the Warn stuff that I mentioned...

G
i got some E brake rear disc calipers from a Caddy Seville at the Pick and Pull yesterday. Any way to tell if these are the right ones? I see eldorado mentioned all the time.
