If you found a D44 for a TJ, I think $1K is a decent deal. Make sure to pull the cover and check it out inside before you buy it. Even a Waggie or Scout axle will run you some money, and then you have to buy the brackets and have them welded on, then make sure the yoke is the same. The TJ D44 would swap right in, no mods necessary. I'd run with the D44, even though it is pricey, I think it'll save you some money in the long run. Make sure to get the E-brake cables with it as well.
