D300 Help

395 Views 3 Replies 1 Participant Last post by  Frosty
I'm trying to finish up a bearing replacement on my D300. Everything is together except, when I torque the rear output yoke, it binds up the shaft. I've been through it about six times, down to zero shims, and it stills binds (no endplay, hard to turn by hand). Any ideas what I could be doing? It's possible that I confused the clutch gears (front to rear), but they looked identical, is there a difference? I guess tonite I'll get give the ol press a workout and swap them around unless someone has an idea what's up. Thanks for any help. Frosty

Do you have the bearing all the way on the shaft into the bearing retainer? This is the only thing I can think of that would bind. Also, the clutch sleeves are identical, but as I recall there are very shallow grooves on one side that go toward the inside of the case, but I believe they are just for oiling.

You need to add more shims between the rear bearing and the speedo gear.

Thanks RVRJEEP, I had a brain lock on shims being used to tighten things up and didn't really look at the setup well enough to see what was going on.
I REALLY wasn't looking forward to completely dismantling again. Sorry I took so long to reply, got tied up doing family stuff and just got back out in the garage tonite. THANKS AGAIN,

Frosty
