custom axles

I'm chest deep in preparing a ford 9" to swap under my CJ. I have most everything worked out, and even had the axle all bolted together... I went to put on a set of tires I have lying around, the lugs didn't match up (do'h) I picked the rearend out of a junk yard for $150, and it had factory disk breakes. It turns out to be from a Lincon, and the bolt pattern is 5-4 3/4. I didn't even know they had such a pattern. So now I need custom built axleshafts, which is ok, because for a front and rear axle, I have less than $1000 invested. And this is with new gears, detroit rear, gearless locker in front (j-10 dana 44), and everythihg.

Suggestions on who to go to / who not to go to for these axles? I'd prefer something cheap, I don't have a budget, but I want it reasonable (I'm also getting the bug pretty bad, the jeep's been sitting for month and half now... )

Thanks

They make great axles and drivetrain components at what seems to be good prices.

Good Luck!!

Moser Engineering will redrill your rear axles to whatever bolt pattern you want for 60 bucks.....don't know their website but I say that is the way to go.

the problem with re-drill is that there isnt' enough meat on the hub for new lugs... and I already have the project pretty much done, except for sliding it under the jeep... Its just the lug pattern suprised me.

Check to see if a local driveline service/machine shop can take f-150 (5 on 5&1/2} axles , shorten and respline them. make sure of the spline( I think the disc lincolns are 28 not 31 spline) is right. Also check bearing size.
I bet you can do this and it's $ for $ cheap. Worth a look anyway.
I've had a pair shortened & resplined for "street" cars before for 100/125$.
Good luck!

BTW the pattern is 4 1/2" on the lincoln.
You measure outside(of 1 stud) across to center of other(pretty funky huh?)
GM is 4 3/4 and 5" (rwd)
ford is 4 1/2 , 5 and 5 1/2
chry is 4 1/2 and 5 1/2
There are oddities but the above applies for 90% of the (rwd) cars and trucks made in the last 30 years.
6 lug fits darn close to anything 6 lug from '39 pont to toy 4x4 to chevy.
8 lug ford fits chevy but not the other way around( can't remember about the chry. 8 lugs)
Hope this helps.

Nope, 4-3/4 it ain't 4.5, and it ain't 5" I did measure skipping one stud... darnedest thing I ever saw. I eyeballed it at the junkyard, and it wasn't 4.5, so I grabbed it assuming it was 5.5 However apparently I was wrong... oh well... $295 for race axles doesn't sound too bad... (per pair)

Remember I said "outside" to "center" of the other.
You can get 4 3/4 if you don't measure that way.
The only 2 lincolns w/ discs are 5 & 4 1/2"
99% of those are 4 1/2's(BTW they are hard to get & big$$$ stock used)
None the less you got a hard to find part (& big demand) for a pretty good price. All the "street guys" want that rear end!

My fault. That's what I get listening to my jeep buddy... Either way, I want to know where all these ppl are who are looking for 9" rear-ends... I've found literally 50 here in DB, all for $100 or LESS! all in running condition, not bent, abused or damaged... Heck, I got this lincon rear end for $150 cuz of the disk brakes... :)

9"( if not a high ratio posi 31 spline) are a dime a dozen.
The disc linclon versailles(narrow)(glorified granada)rearends are $$$.
If not maybe they all ended up in your backyard.?
/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gifIf you want I'll take a dumptruck load delievered to my house for$125 ea.
I still think you got a good buy even if it was not exactally for what you needed.
