Re: cummins engine swap into \'86 grand wagoneer????

I've heard it can be done, though I've never seen one. I own an '02 Dodge Ram with the 5.9L 24-valve Cummings, and my measurements show I can fit that engine into my '73 J-4000's engine bay, though I'd have to move the radiator further forward. I'd be most worried about the weight of the engine on the springs. Is your Dodge leaf or coil? Make sure you can use, or can buy, the springs with the same weight-holding capacity as the Dodge. That Cummings weighs about 2000lbs with all it accessories attached. (Manifolds, turbo, intercooler, alternator, etc.)

Re: cummins engine swap into \'86 grand wagoneer????

my donor pickup has a-frame front suspension kinda like a 2wd chevy... i have coil over gas shocks on the front of my wagoneer...i am going to add an additional leaf spring to my suspension.... planned on doing a 1-2" body lift also.. planning on removing the fenders, header, everything my wagon till i got the cummins and tranny installed... then start fitting everything back....i was also thinking about making a tilt-forward type hood fender and grill for my wagoneer....1 piece... with a free standing aftercooler. trans oil cooler and radiator....i really like the wagonner or i wouldnt consider this swap.... ive got an '86, 86 '79 '78 wagoneers..'80 and 77 fullsize cherokee widetracs...so i oughta have enough stuff in case i mess something up....

Re: cummins engine swap into \'86 grand wagoneer????

Well, sounds like you have enough parts!

The TF727 can be rebuilt with a hardening kit to take the torque of the diesel. The NP229 might not survive, so I'd check your parts for a Dana 20, should work. If you're goin' off-roading with this (you wouldn't be here otherwise), I'd also recommend goin' with a 3"-4" likt kit, with maybe one additional add-a-leaf on each spring pack. You don't wanna crush the oil pan with the Dana 44 front axle. My Dodge has a 2" factory lift (required for the Cummings), and the Dana 70 just BARELY clears the pan. (If i ever take this big rig off-roading, I'll need a 4" just to keep the front axle away from the pan!)

Good luck, and please keep us updated on your progress. I might want to do a swap like this after I wear out my 4.0L in my Jeep J-truck. (Actually, it's a 4.7L, but....)

Re: cummins engine swap into \'86 grand wagoneer????

According to the Stealership's service department, it is a Dana 70. Guess DiamlerChrysler was tryin' to get rid of it's stock of optional equipment before the '03 Ram 2500HD and 3500s came out. Those have AAM (American Axle Manufacturing) axle assemblies. This is why I didn't wait for the '03s. Too new: no lockers, lifts, etc.. Also, the Cummings was changed internally for more torque. Another possible problem area.

I STILL WANNA SEE THIS GRAND ON THE TRAIL!!
