\"Craftsman\" tools

Last night I went to SEARS to pick-up some lawn mower parts, I had always heard that "Craftsman" hand tools had a lifetime replacement guarantee, so I thought I would give it a try. I took a Ratchet, 3 screwdrivers, and a hammer. One of the screwdrivers was bent, another was melted on the end (looked like it had come into contact with some High Voltage/wwwthreads_images/icons/blush.gif), the third one was in pretty good shape, but I figured what the hey if they will replace it.../wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif, the hammer looked about 30years old and was in real bad shape, and the ratchet worked but was getting real loose inside. I walked up and handed the sales person the tools, they said come with me, we walked around and grabbed brand new ones off the shelves, the ratchet I had is out of production, they said I could order a rebuild kit for it at No charge, or I could just have one of the new re-designed ratchets, I took the new one! They rang it all up at No charge (probably for inventory) Smiled, handed me the bag of NEW tools and said "Thank You!" !
I did not have to give them anything "NO EXPLANATIONS", "NO PROOF OF PURCHASE", "NO HASSLES AT ALL", I really like "Craftsman" tools and I have never been so impressed with a company honoring their warranty. I just wanted to share my experience with everyone.
PS. Everyone is quick to Bitch when they get poor service, myself included (see "checker sucks" post/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif) but many times not give credit, when credit is do. This is my attempt to do so /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif.

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

Many years ago, I had a Craftsmen hammer with a cracked wooden handle. This particular hammer had been used for two summers of continuous carpentry work before being retired to a wet, muddy spot in my Jeep for "all purpose" duty. My mom dug it out of the mud & crud one day & took it to Sears in "as-is" condition & got the exact same treatment you described. "Here's your new hammer & thank you very much". Let's see, every so often they have to replace a bent screwdriver & we in turn - out of appreciation for such a policy - loyally purchase thousands of dollars in tools from them........Sears' Marketing folks are smarter than they seem /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif.

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

i went to a flea market and bought a tool box full of old rusted craftsman tool for 8$ and took it to sears. they were all rusted and bent up and they replaced all of it with brand new tools with no questions asked. there was an easy 100$ worth of tools that i now have in my collection for a measly 8$ and a trip to sears.

I agree Scoob. Most people are quick to point out something that's wrong but I too like to give credit where credit is due. I have a story along the same lines. I bought a set of Super Swampers from http://www.tyres1.com. I drove a few miles on them and had to pull over because of the vibration. Turns out I got a faulty tire. They replaced it and even paid shipping/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif.

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

Talking about Sears tools.. My dad gave me his old tool box.. The ratchet has really old, cruddy looking and was really loose so I thought the same thing and took it to Sears.. The guy looked at it for a while and said I had to wait a minute while he got his manager.. They both came back and the manager was as old as my dad.. The guy asked where I got it from and I told him the short story.. I was starting to get annoyed about how long this was taking but then the manager explained what was going on.. I had an original ratchet that Craftsman had come out with.. He told me but I cant remember the year.. They said I could replace it for one of the new ones but it was worth waaaaay more than them even broken.. I purchased a new one and took the old one back home and shined it up.. The manager reluctantly gave it back to me with a smile and said keep that one forever.. Thanks Sears, I will.. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

I just did the same thing about 1 month ago. I had a bunch of old craftsmans lying around and I just thought I give it a try to replace them. And same thing, here you go, have a nice day. Service with a smile. That's what I like. I wish parts for my K5 were replaceable just like that. haha.

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

YeahCraftsman stuff is great, I use their screwdivers as punches and drifts all the time, and when I take them in to get replaced it's never a problem. Another good experience - I broke a steering u-joint in one of my Warn Cro-Mo shafts, and managed to twist the yoke on the outer shaft and splay the yoke on the inner one. Warn sent me new shafts, no charge, paid for shipping and didn't even ask for the old ones back! Now that's service!

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

I love that deal on craftsman tools too. I have decided to buy just craftsman tools from now on. They goofed up a couple of years back. We burned out a thirty year old drill, and they swapped me a new one. The only problem is that this warranty only applies to hand tools, not power tools. but what they don't know, won't hurt them.

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

Snap-on (around here anyway) now replaces the screwdriver tips when you have a warranty claim. They have a press that pulls the handle off and installs a new shaft. Funny thing is, their tools are way more $$ than Craftsman. I don't think that Mac/Snap-on are as good with warranties as they used to be, unless you happen to be one of those guys that buys thousands of $$ worth of tools from them every yr.

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

Yeah, Craftsman are really great tools although up here in Ontario we can also buy MasterCraft tools. They are from a chain of Stores called Canadian Tire ( They have everything from Automotive to fishing to cooking stuff) Anyway, they have there Profesional Series and I love them. Just bought one of there 177 piece sets a month ago for half price $200. They are waranteed forever just like Craftsman. I know a couple of Truck mechanics that have Mastercraft stuff for a back up incase something goes wrong with there snap-on stuff. They say and I have also noticed that these tools feel good in the hand unlike some others I have tried in the past. Either brands I have had no problems with and have had to return both and havn't had one single problem. Actually one time my dad and I bent a Craftsman 1/2" breaker bar in half and when I took it back he said "HOLLY SH*T, how did you do that? and laughed" all I said was you don't want to know. Gave us a new one with out any problem at all. They have great stuff...

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

my X-girlfriends dad gave me all his old rusted craftsman tools because he didn't think they would take them back. So i took tham and traded them all for new ones. My friend also was trying to take an exahust off a car and he decided to heat it up. while heating he left his socket on there so he could just crank it off. well the socket turned many shades of blue and to my suprise they just gave him a new one. I did run into a sears that wouldn't take rust tools or tools that looked abused, i'm just glad it was not the one i normally use.

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

i cant even remember how many screwdrivers i have bent, ratchets that have broken because they were used as hammers, hammers that have cracked, pliers and vise grips that have worn out teeth......etc all of them exchanged at SEARS with no problems.
they surely know how to make come back when you need to buy a new tool. they have my utmost respect.

Too bad GMC won't take back my 1977 Jimmy and give me a new one. It's rusty and beat up looking./wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif And another thing, Why won't my mother-in-law won't take back her daughter. (She's not rusty OR beat up looking, but it sure would be nice to have a NEW one!)/wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

Amen to the Craftsman post!!!! Where else can you get a complete tool set with a lifetime warranty for around $300.00 I have never had a better experience with any other company for anything before. I will own them for as long as I live. Yeah they don't have the Mac or Snap-On name but who cares when they are half the price and just as nice to use. Oh yeah it sure is a lot easier to get them replaced rather than arguing with a salesman in a truck who only comes by once a week. I also think the name Craftsman is just as good as the other brands!!!!!!!

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

I LOVE CRAFTSMAN TOOLS TOO!!!!!! Did you know you can put a 6 ft pipe on the end of a 1/2 drive rachet and when the head breaks( and it will break) they will give you a new one? I think his exact words were " don't tell me, I don't want to know how you broke it." and with that all familiar thank you have a nice day, off I went to try and destroy yet another Craftsman Tool!!!!!!

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

Stanley Tools owns Mac/proto/Blackhawk and a bunch of other names. They also make tools for other companies. A tool guy was telling me they also make sears hand tools (Craftsman) too. But if you go to a building center or hardware store and see Stanley tools, they're usually very reasonably priced - many of them look 100% like Mac wrenches w/o the polished chrome. I'm convinced that they're the same quality and out of the same die. I have a Stanley flex-head wratchet that I bought some 15 yrs ago that's taken a significant amount of abuse. It's an amazing tool.

As far as SK tools go... they're still out there but you really have to look for them. They make excellent tools, right up there in the Snap-on range. They have a series of wrenches called "Super-chrome" that in my opinion are as good as Mac/Snap-on for about 1/2 the price or less. They have the nice chromed finish (that doesn't chip off) and the wrenches really feel balanced in you hand. What I like about them is that their jaws aren't as thick as Craftsman wrenches so they fit into tight spaces. Tex, I don't know about their replace-if-lost policy... I had to buy a 15mm a few months ago that I lost that cost me about $15 (not cheap). I should check into that.

Over the years I've returned very few tools due to breakage. Mostly because I respect my tools and use the right tool for the job. That means not using screwdrivers as punches and use a torch instead of a 5 ft breaker bar on a 3/8" ratchet. Tools can only take so much. Plus, abusing a tool usually causes it to fail at the most inopportune time like sunday at 5:00.

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

A few years back I found half of an old breakdown bar in a field. I took it back and got a new one. It was all rusted and covered in mud but that didn't matter. All of my father's tools, and his fathers tools(he was a mechanic at Lockheed Martin) and so on have been craftsman tools. I now know why. You just have to love that "Satisfaction Guaranteed" above the door as you walk out and the fact that they sponsor NASCAR.

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

Actually, Craftsman are made by Danaher tool. The sane company that make NAPA hand tool, and K-D tools, and Armstrong tools ( I doubt you have heard of them ). The Craftsman are less expensive then NAPA, so go with Craftsman.

Thanks, Ray

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

I took a screwdriver back with a 90 degree bend in it. Obviously done by using it not for what it was intended. A 3/4-1/2 inch socket reducer and a torque wrench that was melted and had burnt spots on it from arcing the connections on the cylinoid of my 78' starter:) Replaced all with no question.

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

Good luck trying to take Snap-on screwdrivers back to the Snap-on man here! He has the same standard excuse "Can't replace a screwdriver thats been used as a prybar/chisel" Thats why my box is now full of great Sears Craftsman tools! I'h sold on 'em also!

Re: \"Craftsman\" tools

I go to garage sales and stuff and ask if they have any tools...if they say yes and they are too high ask them if you can have this busted rachet...they don't even notice its craftsman...and take it back and get a new one! Works great....
