couple of random questions here pertaining to an 85 CJ;

1. What type of components are standard on an 85, T-case, Tranny, axles ect

2. Can I fit 33'' tires under the CJ with no lift, and if not, how much lift?

3. does anyone have a website for Kelly's tires, or have any info on them. Are they good?

4. where in the HELL does bellybutton lint come from?

Thanks in advance

1. 4 cyl. standard, 6 cyl. option, T-5 or 900 series trans, D300 t-case, D30 front axle, Model 20 rear open, traclock optional in rear only. Gearing ranged from 2.73 to 3.73, unfortunately a large number of that year came with 2.73s.
2.They will fit, but you won't be able to drive it.
3. Haven't used Kellys in years, Sears tires used to be made by them when I was a kid.
4. A little tree found only in southern parts of the Chihuahuan Desert.

so waht would be the minimal (read "cheapest") amount of lift to use 33's. I was going to trim the fenders anyway, would a shackle lift be enough?

I ran 31's on a stock CJ with a minor shackle lift for a while. If you do a little triming, a 2.5" lift will work fine. No trimming and you'll rub.

You could probably get away with a 1" body lift and shackle lift, but it would be tight. You wouldn't know for sure until you did it.

I run 33" swampers and have a 4" spring lift.

Dear Cecil:

This is a 100 percent serious question, and I want the straight dope. Every night when I'm undressing for bed I stand in front of the mirror and wonder where belly button lint comes from. This is no joke. --John W., Washington, D.C.

Dear John:

What makes you think you have to urge me to be serious, Jojo? Your navel is one of the few places on your body where perspiration has a chance to accumulate before evaporating. Lint from your clothing, cottons especially, adheres to the wet area and remains after the moisture departs.

Will help find the info you need on your jeep.

No, 33's will not fit with no lift. At LEAST a 2.5" is needed. My older brother runs 34" Swampers with his 2.5" OME, but even then they rub. No rubbing with my 4" and 33" Swampers.

Can't help you on the tires, sorry. I prefer BFG's for a mix of road and off-road, and Swampers off-road. Am leaning towards Boggers for the future though.

Your're welcome! Happy Jeepin'

so If I buy a 2.5 inch lift, what else am I going to have to do? pitman arm, brake hoses ect? Or is that small enough that you can leave the other components alone. I know these are pretty silly questions to most of you, but I'm still pretty new at this and I want to make sure I have enough money before I dive into this. Is anyone out there looking to sell a used 2.5 or so lift?

Springs and shocks and the related hardware. BTW, to run 33s with a 2.5" lift you will need at least a 1" body lift. I know that for
sure, that's exactly what I have on an 85 CJ-7. At full articulation, the tires just barely clear, they wouldn't without the body lift.
I'm using the M.O.R.E. 1" aluminum pucks.

Depends on whose 33s... Swamper TSLs are a little over 33", others 33s aren't really 33"... A 33"x10.50 would be different then a 33"x12.50, etc, etc so depending on whose tire you run, you may or may not need a body lift and/or trimming. Everyones milage is a little different. Also depends on whose springs you use... BDS != SuperLift != OME, etc. etc...

Generally a drop pitman arm isn't necessary for a 2.5" lift. Long brake lines and shocks will be required.

None of this is written in stone and your experience may or may not be similar to experiences posted by any of us here...
