Comment on Chilton\'s and Haynes

Chilton's and Haynes.......

It's hard to understand why these publications are so wrong sometimes..... the drawings are what they are.... sure hope that everyone takes the instructions with a real perspective and the understanding that what you read may be crap.

Just my opinion..... I might be wrong, but I'm sure that I am not!

I've always thought that the HAYNES wiring diagrams were the best. Some of the mechanical ops in both manuals seem a bit idealized in some cases.

Given my background wiring diagrams are either correct or trash. But I have found Haynes to be good in the area too.

I don't think that anyone can give you a perfect wiring diagram from a 198x CJ..... sad isn't it.

My point is more to the mechanical descriptions and lubrication suggestions. Simple things that there are lots of other materials to go by.

Neither are perfect for all around information. Good, but not great. I think some of us get baby-ed with "factory" manuals. At least thats what I think about me. After getting the full service tech manuals.........it's hard to appreciate haynes or chilton.

Not that their never wrong........but I think it more of the "lack of imformation" than "wrong information" by a large percentage.

Considering that these manuals are meant for the general masses, they aren't that bad. Sometimes we need a little more and that's when we find that these don't cover our particular needs. That's when the FSM come in handy.

i've bought several of them. not a big fan of either. i only have one question whatever happened to MOTOR manuals? they where probably the best third party service manual out there. But can only find them used if at all. and nothing on newer stuff.

What happened to Mitchell? As to all of the third party manuals, I hate that they stick seventeen different models and years in the same manual...

Mitchell sells exclusively to Auto repair shops on DVD, they are still around but don't have any product that the general public sees.

Yep 17 different model years and dozens of makes.

I bought the chilton and the haynes and was disappointed with both. I then bought the service manual and haven't looked back. You get what you pay for so don't expect much when you buy the chilton or haynes.
