The colors of the Jeep Grill emblem, rear American Motors tailgate emblem, and anything else that needs restoring..Are there any available/recommended off-the-shelf colors? If not, what colors and "tecnique" has anyone used to do this?

I have used "Testors" model paint to paint mine. The have an Orange that is real close. On the Green I had to experiment and tint. Close enough for govt work.

Clint, are you working on your '71. Does it have an original AMC logo on the rear...(red/white/blue same as cars & J trucks)? If so, it's an early AMC version (full production by AMC didn't officially start til '72) If the rear logo IS original, then the front grille badge should also have red and blue in it vs the "Kaiser" gold and burnt orange. This is also obvious on the hub cap transition of colours in '71/'72. AMC continued using the same grille badge as previously, just changed the centre colours. To see the "true" colours on the AMC version just look for the small badge on a car or P/U or waggie (on tailgate), those were encased in clear plastic and didn't fade from the sun. John is right, Testor's paint is by far the best paint I've found for this detail work. Lots of colours avail. to mix and create the correct shades/tones,

Dan, This is really a surprise to me! SC1's, Jeepsters, Commandos, Jeepster Commandos, Hursts, halfcabs, wagons, converts...My head is reeling!!!
When I got the wagon, the PO had no front grill emblem, 15X10 spoke wheels and cut-out rear wheel wells. Last Fall, I sent all the emblems off to be chromed and the AMC tailgate emblem(Lower left corner)went with the rest. I can only hope I haven't offended the Jeepster gods! Now you have made me go to Jim Allen's guide and look up the Vin#. Mine is 8705F17 72327. As prev. posted, it mentions that the 71-73 Jeepster Commandos and Commandos have the serial # on the inside of the left doorpost. I noticed 7,193 units of the 8705F were made in the 71 model. Were these AMC Jeepster Commandos (I presume) an even more limited production? This doesn't mean I'm going to have to undo everything I've done and start restoring this jewel, does it?
And, by the way, where does the red and blue go on the grill badge? (Just in case I don't do the restoration!!!)

Clint, as you may know production #'s are very sketchy and somewhat unreliable for individual yrs...very difficult to say IF or how many "AMC" Jeepsters were built in N. America. If yours had an "original" AMC badge on the lwr. left corner then all other badges should also have AMC 'red/white/blue' colouring. Grille badge then would still use same "Kaiser" style badge but with "blue" in upper left/lwr right quadrant, and 'red in upper right/lwr left quadrants as shown on some sales brochures until '75 on "J" trucks for instance. The hub caps would also match the badges, either the "Kaiser" gold/burnt orange, or the AMC red/blue. The AMC colours are indeed shown in use on left lwr rear panel on '71 Jeepsters, but became the norm for '72 and changed slightly for '73 (Jeep Commando's). It would be very enlightening to know if yours was an "AMC" JEEPSTER. Oh by the way what's the going cost for rechroming those badges these days. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Dan, A friend of mine with an early chevy took some bumpers, emblems, and other stuff to a shop in Arlington, Tx. and it ended up costing me 68 bucks. I'd say it was a good chrome job, a '4' on a 1-5 scale. I really want to thank you for this revelation and the info. on the colors. I've gone to some AMC pages and haven't gotten anything back as far as my rig is concerned...they just don't have any idea, but if you want some info. on a Pacer, let me know!
