Has anyone reclocked thier Dana 300 in a 1979 CJ-7 ?
It sounds like a pretty good idea, you get better ground
clearence. Any input would be greatly appreciated, like linkage or
front dive shaft angles, skid plate. I have a 304 with Dana 300 and T-18

79's came with Dana 20's, not Dana 300's.

Yes and no. The clocking by itself doesn't improve ground clearance. It's the removal of the section of the skid plate that dips down that gets you better ground clearance.

The linkage chabges position slightly, front driveshaft angle is a bit steeper, and you can get rid of the dip in the skid plate.

If that is what you have, then there is an adapter between the T-18 and Dana 300 and that adapter will determine whether or not you can clock your t-case.

this is a requirement when installing a XCL suspension. it can be done by either redrilling your adaptor (not always an option) or drilling and tapping new stud holes in the t case itself.

I installed an NV4500 in my 86CJ7 and I clocked the D300 appx. 12 deg. Have your transmisson bolted to the engine and bellhousing
with a jack holding it in the proper position. Then slip the D300 onto the adapter, install the xfercase shifter and rotate the D300 as far
as you can and still have its shifter work without interferring with the floorboards. Then mark where the holes are on the adapter. Remove
the xfercase and redrill the adapter. In some cases you can't drill all the holes. I'm using 4 of them and haven't had a problem in 2 1/2
years of hard wheeling.

I notive you said the XCL suspension. Do you mean Warn's XCL Coil Spring conversion? Do you like it? Is it worth the $ and how much was the installation? I am seriously thinking about the suspension, but am having trouble with the cost.

Thanks.

yes the black diamond coil conversion(aka XCL). i do not have one yet, but i have installed and tested one. the trail capability is top notch. they are a little of a compromise on the road. ride is soft, but this adds body roll. steering components must be in excellent shape or you will have bumpsteer. it is very rugged and not easy to install. all of the axle brackets must be welded on (we are talkin hours of welding here) as well as a ton of measuring. the cost is a lot, but just to get the shocks alone from fox is about $1200, and this does not include the coils. so if you start adding up all of the time and parts it takes to build from scratch, you will find its not that bad. a cj kit takes about 40 man hours to install so you will want to take that into consideration when you buy one. the dana 300 is a little work because warn designed the belly pan to be as tucked up as possible. this means clocking the case and possibly raising the engine, tranny, and tcase. that is not too hard as you have to run at least a 1in body lift and a CV on the rear driveshaft. time consuming, but not hard. all and all most of the people i have talked to are very happy. the ones that were not seem to be from a poor install. this has cost some a lot of money to have them fixed so they are done right. all of them that i have seen on a 20 deg ramp have scored at least 1100 and as much as 1450(this one was a modified, trailer only trail unit). rumor has it that the narrow track cj7 kits will be out this spring. personally i would get widetrak axles if i were to do a cj7.

i could ramble on and on, so if anyone has any ????s email me.
