I have a safety check due here shortly and I can't get my stock 84 horn to work. Everything under the horn cap seems to be in order. I tried a wire from the hot side of the battery to the horn connection and nothing happened so it may be shot. What are you guys doing for a simple one wire replacemnet using the stock wireing. I don't want to make a project out of this, I just need to get my sticker.

Thanks

First, check the ground connection. If that's not it, you can pick up a cheap one at Autozone, et al.

Taz and DD have told you everything you need to know except:

Many cars have two horns, a high pitch and a low pitch. If you get one from a junkyard, listen before you buy. One of them sounds like an anemic oogah horn, and probably isn't loud enough by itself to get you through the test.

My understanding in the horn grounds directly to the fender and I have made sure that is all good. I live in Hawaii. No wrecking yards on Kauai believe it or not, and no Autozone. We have a Napa. I'll give them a call today. Thanks

Lady Bird salutes you.

There should be a bolt or rivet that holds the horn to the bracket. Check to make sure you have a good ground there. You're right in that it grounds to the fender through the bracket but there are a lot of places for dirt and/or corrosion to build up and insulate the connection.

I'll gladly deliver and install a pair of new horns for the price of transportation!
