CJ5 suspension travel?

795 Views 3 Replies 1 Participant Last post by  **DONOTDELETE**
Tryin' to figure out where I should be, shock-wise. My 79 CJ5 has about a 2.5 or 3" Trailmaster (I think; was in it when I got it) spring lift, dunno what shocks. I measured 6" between the axle tube and the bump stop, and there's 6" of shock travel from the rest position to fully compressed, so that looks OK. However, the shock only extends 1.5" beyond the rest position, and I haven't yet measured the axle travel with the shock disconnected.

Does this sound normal? What kind of travel should I expect to get with this kind of setup? Will I ever see 6" of compression, or should I have longer shocks and and extended bump stop?

Ya know I dont know completely since I'm pretty new to this whole thing...but from reading on here on certain topics I'm pretty sure you dont want an extended bump stop since it would limit the travel...I would assume a different fix would be better...*looks around*...where is everybody?..this is an easy question for most of'm on here..*heh*

I would drop the bumpstops 2-4" then check travel with no shocks to see the longest shock you can run without it bottoming out.
