CJ5 good buy?

I am looking at getting a Jeep and found a 1975 CJ-5 for 1500. It has a spring over and is running 35", that's the good part. The bad is that it needs body work (may need replacing) and the owner says it leaks coolant from the freeze plug in the back of the motor. He says it runs. It has a 304 and 3-speed tranny, dana 44 rearend.

Now I am looking at fixing this up and doing a engine/tranny swap and the body work, but being my first Jeep, is there anything specific I should look for? I checked the frame real good for cracks and I am going to drive it this weekend.

Any imput would be helpful, I have been reading the info on off-road and doing as much reading as I can.

My last 4x4 was a Suzuki Samuria with 31" and I need to get back back into something I can wheel.

TIA,
Matt

Try to talk him down a little more, see if you can get him down to $1,200 out the door. Sounds like a project getting started. There is only one way to learn about a jeep besides reading and that's tearing a jeep apart and putting it back together. Go for it and join the club!! Top

If your looking at replacing the tub anyways . Why not hold out for a bit and try and find something 76 and up .Possibly one with the 258/T18 combo(more for the tranny ). There are a lot more 76 Jeeps out there for donors and parts in general are a bit easier to come by . IMO they are also a better Jeep , you get boxed frame etc...

Jeff,

I am hoping I don't have to replace the tub, I have to look at it again, more closely. What other differences are better on the 76 and up? I know the rear axle changed to a amc 20 but what else? Also with a motor/tranny (automatic) would a CJ7 be a better fit?

Thanks,

Matt

I may be wrong on this one but I think there were quite a few changes between 70 - 75 , I think the 74 & 75 models had some significant things exclusive to those 2 years .This effects parts availability . If anything Matt , the boxed in frame would be enough to sway my decision .
Look at that tub CLOSELY , I just finished repairing one that I thought looked good and I`ve replaced almost everything except the side skins. The floor ,tub mounts underneath , traverse section , rear end piece the whole works . Now that I`ve done it I might be swayed next time to go Fiberglass . Maybe.
You ask about the CJ7 ? When this CJ5 is all done and paid for , I am going to build a CJ7 with a 401 , Quadratrack etc... something that hauls a$$ .
good luck and keep us posted .

I would probably go with 76 and up also. From the info I've gathered, late 70 models had the best transmissions (only time you could get the T18A). If you are wanting a CJ5, there is a 78 with a 4sp in the local paper for $2K. I didn't call about it, but if it is the orginal T18 that's not that bad of deal.

Coming from a guy with a '69, I would hold out for a 76 or later. Lot's more options!!

If I had a choice between a pre 76 or post Id go with the post. That choice is not always available though...It comes down to your "instinct" and the "heat of the moment". What ever your choice you'll be proud!!

Id check out the frame, especially at the point where the leaf springs attach to the frame, front and rear. This is the primary place for frame cracks to appear. If you are in a area like Im in...jeeps are far between and when one comes up for sale your looking at a minimum of 2500.00.

Guys,

Thanks for the advice. I am going to take a closer look at it and we will see what happens.

The problem in NY is that either they (jeeps) are 3000 and up or in the scrap bin. And I don't have that kind of money to spend.

An example, a local junk yard has a late 70's CJ5 and 7. $700 for both but NO paperwork. Well the search continues.

Thanks again,

Matt

You may be able to take the VIN # of the CJ you want to register to the DMV to see if they would issue a title. I'd give them a call just to ask! You may could luck up and get two CJs for $700 /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif!
