CJ says \"click\"

I replaced the starter, starter relay, ignition switch, and the battery cables on my 79 CJ7. Sometimes when I turn on the key on it just goes "click", and won't start. Could my trusty 5 year old red top battery be the part of the problem? Always seems to be hot. What else do I need to check? Thanks.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif How is the (-) cable set up? Directly to the starter housing I trust?? Hmmm...?? /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Uh... no, it is on the block and has been for years. Just started this not starting deal. Worth a shot! Thanks.

I had a problem with the ground going all the way down to the starter some years ago (1989 to be exact). For some reason AMC ran both the hot and ground in the same loom and mounted the loom very close to the exhaust manifold. Well, you can guess the rest..../wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif This instance was my first "git back" situation and I received some good help from a gentleman with a full sized Chevy Pick-up. Fortunately, we were able to save the battery in time! /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Since that time, the ground has stayed fastened up on the block as far away from the manifold as possible.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif I look at where the diesels have their (-) connected and learn from that....there is a pole RIGHT ON the starter to connect. After Jeeps get a little older and a lot rustier, it's a good idea to run a ground network and connect all the various Jeeps....the chassis...the body....the engine-tranny group....the front end tinware...etc... it really helps stuff work right, like headlights and gas gauges./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif Before I changed the crankshaft, however, I would have the five-year old battery checked for everything. Five years is pushing it./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Re: CJ says \"click\"

I had exactly the same problem with my CJ. I put one of those star type lock washers under the head of
one of the starter bolts and under the head of the bolt where the ground cable goes to the block. No
more problems.
Re: CJ says \"click\"

All this started after I put in a new clutch and starter. For some reason, I smoked 2 starter realys and melted the hot wire. After another new (rebuilt) starter, realy and new wires, I thought it was fixed. Once when I started it, it would not turn off, like the starter was hung, so I was thinking ignition switch. While doing the clutch, I put on a new ring gear, mine was pretty worn.
Still kinda of scratching my head over this.

Yo Jps,
Before you spend any more money CHECK ALL CONNECTIONS IN The circuit to your charging system .If you have a charger try to jump it off that,if it is not charging,As you drive your lights and all accessories will dim to near nothing.
I had the same problem and it was a bad connection at my ampmeter which ran from my alternator, to the ampmeter, to the POS. side of my relay so my battery was not charging.thus my starter relay would just click I knocked the connection loose when i was replacing my heater duct by moving the gauge around, the wires are pretty heavy and were hard to tell they were loose at all.or the gauge may be bad if you have one,if not check all connections with a testlight or meter if you have one.
also clean all your terminals with Baking soda/water mixed to a paste and cleaned off with fresh water, try to get some inside where the connector crimps the wire. """DO NOT GET ANY IN YOUR BATTERY IT WILL KILL IT""""
Good luck

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif Since we seem to be getting wide afield with the "maybes", what about the flywheel gear? Is it on in the right direction? Is the starter tooth clearance correct? Is that the correct starter? /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif
