CJ or Wrangler?

I have an 83 CJ-7 and a friend of mine wants to trade for his 93 Wrangler 4cyl Soft Top. The deal he wants is my jeep and $2k. His Wrangler has 70k miles, a/c and is in pretty good shape, the only kicker is the 4 banger. He placed a value of about $6k on his jeep and about $4k on mine. Any opinions?

It's hard to say without seeing your CJ. Did HE place the value of $4k on your Jeep or did you? $6k sounds about inline for a 4cyl YJ but they are really anemic. OK for a street Jeep but I've been on the trails in my bosses '95 4cyl. YJ and it leaves something to be desired in the horsepower department. No doubt the Wranglers are a nicer Jeep to drive every day than a CJ (Please dont send any hate mail for that comment, I own a CJ-7 and I do love it!) but the CJ just seems more trail worthy. Now if your CJ is a rust bucket, I'd say trade. You can always drop a V8 in the Wrangler! Just my opinion.

IMHO The fuel injected four banger is the best thing you could have off-road. You won't break many parts and mine goes through mud, sand and everything else with my 33" mud tires. The gas milleage rocks but on highway performance suffers some from the big tires. It really depends on what you want to do with it. Maybe you should see if he'll let you trade vehicles for a week to see if you like how it drives. Whatever your decision, enjoy your Jeep.

I've got both and overall, I would let my YJ four banger go before I would let go of my CJ7. I sure as hell wouldn't pay two grand difference unless, like some of the other guys said, your CJ is a rust bucket. Of course, it does depend on the condition of the two Jeeps. YJs are a little more comfortable and nicer on the highway but CJs are a lot tougher, in my experience. Also, the four cylinder is pretty weak. Both are nice so I don't guess I've helped you much.

NOOOOOO! Don't do it. That CJ you have is gorgeous. You can see that YJ's are a dime a dozen. Please don't get me wrong, any Jeep is a good Jeep /wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif . But, what you have is a piece of history. What do you think they went back to the round light look for the TJ's? It's a classic design. I have a CJ and I wish it looked half as good as yours. I say dump the 2 g's into the CJ to make it whatever you find attractive about the YJ (i.e. sound system, carpet).
Just my opinion. /wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

Wow, man, outside of the too-long tailpipe, and what looks like broken bucket seats, that CJ looks pretty nice. Now, if you have a bad tub, or any other mechanical problems, maybe you would win here, but think what you lose - dana300 transfer case for a np231, if you've still got the 2-piece rear axles, then the rears are sorta weak on both accounts, you'd be going to the vacuum disconnect up front and losing your manual hubs, etc., etc.

Keep the CJ. $2K buys a lot 'o' stuff, and he knows it.

That's the 2nd comment about my tail pipe. Looks like I'll be hack-sawing it off this weekend. As for the seats, they are racing buckets with deep wells and I have mine set all the way back. Looks weird but they are pretty comfortable once you get your cheeks nustled in them, and they are totaly waterproof. The only thought I gave about the Wrangler was the newer model, mileage, and A/C. Mine has a full soft top and 100k miles. Yea, I'm kinda partial to the CJ look and an I6 seems better than an I4. I think I'll keep my toy and buy another truck or something with a/c. Thanks to all for twisting my arm back into CJ mode.

Re: CJ or Wrangler?--GOOD GOD, MAN!

I just saw your picture. Tell you what, I also have a 1993 YJ 4-banger, and I would consider giving you $2000 to trade! Your CJ is beautiful. I love my Jeep, but I have to tell you not to trade. Did you recently bang your head?

Whe-e-e-e-e-w !

I got a new computer at work today, and the damned thing wouldn't let me post a reply....said I was anonymous!

Why would you even consider trading off an original Jeep in that condition for one of the newer facsimile Jeeps that the Libs made them downgrade because they had a few cases where they rolled over and the fool driving it didn't wear his seatbelt and got killed or maimed.
Tell you what. If you really want the newer one, tell your friend to give YOU $2000 and you'll trade him in hot weather and then take yours back until next summer.

Sorry YJ guys and gals. I still just can't get over the day I saw a Jeep with square headlights. I am glad to see the engineers figured it out and put the round ones back. If they would just put the turn signals back UNDER the headlights they'd be on the right track.....
