Hey all, My CJ's Alternator has a small brown wire coming out of the plug, It has been cut, I am having some charging problems and I am wondering if this is a voltage trigger or something?
Is this wire necessary? if so where do I hook it up to?

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Yes, you need this wire. If it is coming off #1 or A terminal on the alternator, it is the excite wire. It is connected to a source of key on voltage through the special resistance wire. It can be replaced with a 100 ohm resistor, diode with the stripe pointing towards the alternator or an idiot light, all connected to a source of key on power, such as the red with white stripe wire coming out of the harness connector on the firewall side. From the factory, a single strand nickel wire is connected to the harness and runs to this terminal on the alternator.

That's the drawing I keep in a drawer of important reference material, and I take a look at it every time someone posts a similar question (or else I might mix up the A and B on the harness. It helped me out when I needed to clean up my old wiring harness and add an idiot light for the alternator.
