CJ-7 rear corner support

On one side (pass side)there is a support that raps around the inside of the corner. On the other side there isn't one. Is this support necessary if so why only on one side? I assume it was to re-enforce that body panel for the stock tire carrier. Its about to have a hole in it for my repositioned gas filler. Unless anyone has any major objections I'm abou to start cuttin'. Thanks for the input.

It's for the carrier...you should be able to remove it instead of hacking it up.
