CJ-5 or CJ-7

At the moment I own a 76 CJ-5 but I can't find a frame for it and can't afford a new one.I'm thinking about just buying a CJ-7 tub and frame and just use the parts off the 5. What I want to know is if you think the 5 or the 7 is better.

Thanks

Are you trying to start a war? Niether is better in my opinion, because the CJ-8 is the best, all others don't matter /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif. If you're happy with the length of the CJ-5 (my brother is a CJ-5 nut), then stick with it. If you like the length of the CJ-7, go for it. The CJ-7's are a little easier on the drivetrain swap than the CJ-5, due to the wheelbase difference. I like the length of the CJ-8's, but that's just me. There are instances where length will hurt and instances where length will help. You'll need longer driveshafts doing the swap, among other items. If it were me, I'd look for another CJ-5.

Let's keep it in the family shall we? /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

I contemplated this question myself. It really depends on what you want to use it for. A CJ-5 is a little shorter, so it might snake through tight trails better, but you pay for it in ride quality. Not that a CJ-7 is a Caddy, but 10 inches of wheelbase on something that is under 100" is alot! I picked the -7 because of this. Mine will be a daily driver with some moderate (no rock-crawling) trail use. I am also 6'1" tall, so leg room in the CJ-5 was a concern. I know I could fab up some new seat mounts and get the leg room I need. Guess I'm just lazy and wanted a Jeep that had a little extra length built in. Hope this helps. Keep in mind, most CJ-7 frames aren't in very good shape either, so check them closely!

Don't listen to these guy's, a KIA is the best of the best."HA HA HA HA"
You have asked an age old question that has stumped even the wisest of wise men.
I say "if it say's Jeep on it and you like it by all means drive it."

I've had a 74cj5,81cj7 and currently a cj8.The 5 was a lot of fun.The 7 will take a lot of the pucker factor out a tough trail. The 8 is a totally different beast.I cant seem to pop the front end up in the air as easily as the other two.Kind of makes it hard to get radical pictures when the thing just goes where you point it heheheheh!!

Nah, CJ-5 is too short, CJ-7 just dose not look like a "real jeep", scrambler is a pickup truck wanna be. CJ-6 just right...
Seriously, as long as it says jeep you are doing the right thing, Willys-overland has stock jeep frames they only want $600 for a cj6 frame that would be reall easy to chop down to cj-5 dimensions.
good luck, jjc

HAD TO GET A -7 FOR SQUARE DOORS. NEED THE EXTRA ROOM FOR THE PORTION OF THE ANATOMY THAT GOES THERE.

here let me answer your question.. first off.. you cant put your 5 front clip on to a 7 the fenders are shorter. and how bad is your frame? they sell reinforcement sides.. that you can put on the inside or outside of the frame... and if you like your 5 and would like to use it mostly for parts.. then find another or buy a new frame.. a frame for my 7 was 1300 bucks.. to my door, i didnt get it, too much for my blood. but yours would be cheaper.. and in the long run.. it depends on how much your 5 means to you and how good a shape the rest of it is in.
or you could just by a 7 and be done with it.. leave that other crap for these minivan drivin folks.. with those 8's and 6's.. who wants a jeep station wagon.. thats what they look like.. lol.. you really want the best.. get a willies.. i say the older the better.. but i am fond of 7's..

I thought the CJ-5 front clips were shorter on the '72 and older...or am I mistaken? '73 and newer CJ-5 should (might) be the same as the CJ-7's. Please tell me if I'm wrong, but this is how I understood it.

Well, I have a CJ7 at the moment, but I looked at some 5's. I got the 7 cause it was rust free, everything worked, the price was right. Now that I have it, I think that extra 10" of length is gonna come in handy. Like carrying a wife, dog and all that camping gear. But still, the 5 is a handsome rig to look at and the short base has gotta be a good thing on tight trails.

Look, if it has JEEP on it and a short wheelbase you can't go wrong!

yes.. i think you might be right.. the more i think of it.. i think you are right on those years for the 5.. sorry about that

I've had all three of the CJ's (5 - 7 - 8) and prefer the '8. I didn't like the '5 because of the cramped space, but it would be a good rocker or tight trail vehicle. The '7 was great, but I wanted cargo space. When I found my Scrambler, it was everything I ever wanted. Had it now for 5 years and will keep it till it falls apart below me.

Keep on Jeepin'

Right on!! It holds four people and still has room for a cooler and a tool box full of stuff.I built a full cage for it and even put kid cage on back.It has a back seat and a cj7 soft top, plus about a 2-3ft. space for a cooler and tools.

If you cannot afford a new frame, build one, its not that diffcult. Check out the dj5 frame they are real close and dirt cheap. I,m running a jeepster commando frame under my cj2a

Thank you all for your opinions. I have decided on a cj-7. As to building a frame I do not have the fabricating skills necessary due the fact that I am only 14. I talked to willys overland and the didn't even have a frame in stock and want 6000 for a tub. I emailed matkins they will build a frame for around 1600. And I talked to this place in Denver called Mile High Jeep Rebuilders and he said that my 76 cj-5 fenders will bolt on to a 76-86 cj-7 tub so if anyone has a frame or tub within these years please contact me.

Thank you
Kevin
