Just a simple question:

'78 CJ5, I'm swapping from the stock steel 15 gallon tank. Did the large poly CJ tank allow for exhaust out the back from the factory? I'm assuming it did. But sizing it up (with my eyeballs) it doesn't seem to leave much room.

Anybody ever run duals around a poly 20 gallon tank?

Thanks,
Drew

Yes in a CJ-7.

CJ-5 with a 20 gallon poly tank?? hmmm??

Not much room in there for your legs either...... Seems to me you are trying to invent something here... hope that it works. How do ya like fenderwell headers and side mufflers?

I run duals with my cj5 and the poly tank. my exhaust more or less sits above my leaf springs beside the gas tank and angle out a couple inches before the shackle. i run 2.5 in pipe and i've never had a problem with anything hitting or rubbing.

That is how it works on a CJ-7 (even with a cat (or tow)) but it must be really tight on a CJ-5.

Was that a custom installation?? or did you find the parts somewhere?

i had a exhuast put it in by an exhuast shop (run a chevy 383 now), but the original one ran the same way just only on one side. its not particularily tight anywhere but if i get my jeep to flex more i'm going to have to have them remake the part after the mufflers with a larger axle hump as they didnt make a really large this time around. i dont know if they ever ran dual exhuast on a cj5? if they did it wouldnt be that hard to fabricate from parts as long as you had the respective sides that went over the axles, everything before that is pretty straight forward.

Without the Cat! Maybe it's like the difference between a CJ-7 and the CJ-8.... just a chunk of tube.

But you can't actually have two Cat's up under there (like it matter what happens to the air.... the water is gonna kill you) there isn't enough room.

The Chevy stuff makes it only slightly different.... damn the things that I could break if I put in a SBC.. lol what fun.

I'm currently running duals around my stock steel tank. But the exhaust runs between the spring shackles and the fuel tank. The poly tank seems to fill this WHOLE space, from shackle to shackle. So I was wondering where the stock exhaust comes out.I haven't taken any REAL measurements. I'm still working a few repairs, and just getting ahead of myself a little bit. Thought I'd size it up......

The CJ5 and the CJ7 are basically the same animal. I think it's 8 1/2 difference? But it's all in the rear seat area. I've sectioned a CJ5 frame to a CJ7 years ago, so I'm assuming that the back half hasn't changed. And the poly tank will fit.

I'm not really inventing something just taking advantage of the factory options.

I'm not sure about the "legroom" comment. I don't know what you are referring to. It won't change with my tank swap..... I think maybe you are thinking it's under the seat? (older CJ5).

I'm not a fan of the fenderwell headers and side exhaust. Dumping out in front of the rear tires will be my last resort. And then I'll have to swap my mufflers for something a LOT quieter.

Thanks,
Drew

The pipe takes a turn out behind the tire just after it goes over the axle. Maybe you can see it in this pic.

Guess maybe all of the difference in length is from between the axles. If that is correct the 20 gal. tank should fit the same. With that said, the leg room comment is because you can't get the seat back nearly as far with respect to the steering wheel in a CJ-5.

I think in-frame headers are better simply because it looks more stock.

Good Luck

I`m currently running duals with Dynomax turbo`s. All of my exhaust is tucked up inside the frame of my `72 CJ5 and exits the rear at a 45 deg. angle just in front of the poly tank and behind the tires. The guy at Mineke did an exellent job fitting it all in considering also that he had to deal with getting around my rear Dana 60. Although the pipes are only 1 1/2 " from the tank, I`ve had no problems with the heat.

I have the 20 gal poly tank. Since I have the 6 I only have a single exhaust. It is a lot tighter than a 15 gal steel one, but not too hard to do.
Bottom line....it can be done and by yourself if you want to.

And OlllllllOCJ , nice looking Jeep. Never seen that exact color combo and graphics before. I like it.

Thanks...

That's my Son's 1984 with a 304..... it came like that from a friend of a guy that rebuilt dozens of 80's Jeeps here in Indiana, wonder why he went into hidding after selling all of those Jeeps?
The pic is well over a year old, the Jeep is now at living with my son cause it's his (damn I miss that motor). It's a fun rig for a mostly stock CJ... the 304 with aluminum intake and 4 barrel are great on the street... it has no tires or axles to make it fun off road, open diffs (silly cross corner drive).
We reworked the 304 and the T5/D300 got reworked due to a freak front drive shaft.... It's solid.... needs more work and some $$$$
