none taken shagster...but seriously, do you know any ups or downs? the stock 5.7 vortec is 260 hp and i was told the ford 5.4 have somewhere around 230-250, something like that. but there are other things that come into play, wieght of the truck, stuff like that...

I would assume that the Chevy is faster, due to the higher horsepower and the fact that Chevys generally make more torque through a broader RPM range. I know that the new Silverados, even with the 5.3, are considerably faster than a comperable Ford with the 5.4.

Stock Vortec 5.7L is 255HP, 330 lbft of torque. I don't know about the F##d 5.4. One thing to remember is I think most F##d's came with 3.55 gears while most Chevy's have 3.73's (except my 3.42's...damn high gears). So, you'd probably take a F**d off the line, but for all out max speed, the F**d might take you. Wouldn't matter anyway since the speed-limiter kicks in at 95 or so! Anyone else know about weights?

Yikes, explaining gears isn't terribly easy. Essentially the lower the gear is (numerically higher), the easier it is for the engine to turn the wheels. That's why when you increase tire size you should lower the axle ratio to match. A ratio of 3.42 means that for every 3.42 revolutions of the pinion gear (or the driveshaft), the ring gear (or the wheels) rotates once. that was about what my dad said, except i understood it this time...so if i have 3.42 or whatever, its harder to turn than the 3.73's ... therefore turning the wheel slower, making it slower? so what would be better performance? 3.73? i just went from baby smooth 265/75 toyo's to 285/75bfg a/t's now, work your magic...

It's not so much that it's slower because the wheel turns slower, but because it doesn't have as much mechanical advantage. Let's see, how to explain... OK, think of it like this, when you ride a mountain bike in the lowest possible gear, (smallest gear in front, largest in the rear, you can accelerate really quick, but can't go very fast, right? And if you go in the highest possible gear, you can go real fast, but can't accelerate very fast at all, right? That's basically the same idea, the first example would be of ultra low gearing (ultra high numerically), the second of ultra high gearing (ultra low numerically). The idea is to get the right balance of good acceleration and good cruising rpm when choosing gears for your truck. There's a good gear ratio calculator on ORC somewhere, I'm sure somebody will post a link to it... Off the top of my head, I would tell you to go to 4.10s, your truck will accellerate like crazy and you won't have to regear if you go to bigger tires later, but with O/D you should still be OK on the freeway.

For a given driveshaft RPM, the higher gears (lower number) will result in faster wheel rotation. For example at a driveshaft RPM of 1000, 3.42's will result in about 292 revolutions of the wheel, while 3.72's will result in about 268 revolutions of the wheel.

Matt, I disagree. Higher gears (lower numerically) make it more difficult for the engine to turn the wheels than lower gears. The whole idea of changing to lower gears is to make the wheels easier for the engine to turn, right? Using your own example:

In this example, the 3.42s would turn the wheels more revolutions than 3.73s over the same period of time. Making one revolution of a wheel takes the same amount of work to do regardless of the gearing. Work is work, different gears can't change the physical properties of the wheel or the forces (such as friction) acting on it. The logical conclusion is that more work has been done since more revolutions were made. Correct? The higher gears may turn the wheel more revolutions, but it's more difficult to actually turn them.

I dissagree with Matt too. After I lifted my truck and put on the 35's I still had my stock 3:43's in the diff. The truck was so guttless it wasn't even funny. I could hardly start off at all and could not spin the tires. (the truck is a standard by the way) I now have 4:10's and the truck has more balls than I would have ever guessed. I can now lay a patch so long it makes the Mustang guys say Holly Sh$t!!!!!!!

Okay, you want comparable stats? Well, the '97-'98 version of the 5.4 Ford was rated at 230HP & struggled to keep up with the 5.7L Vortec 350 at 255HP. For '99 the Triton 5.4 was increased to 260HP & actually OUTaccelerates the 270HP Vortec 5300, and the 4.7 Toyota is quicker yet. The 5.4 Ford with its stroke of more than 4" (longer than a 454 or 460 BTW) has more torque & the Toy has less weight. For 2000, the Vortec 5300 was increased to 285HP & with proper gearing is now just a tick ahead of the Toy & Ford (Dodge BTW is a very distant 4th - a full second slower to 60 than any of the above). I've seen numerous tests comparing the "big 4" & they all point to the same thing. BTW, the Chevy does best in the comparisons when all are in 4x4 trim as it's available with 4.10's while the others aren't (well, the Dodge is, but it's just plain slow). So, that's the bottom line as things exist today /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif.

broncos are slow. Ive smoked every one of them ive raced bad. They have no acceleration. the only thing they have going for them is when someone sees a K5 and thinks "cool bronco"

I think the Chevy is a heavier vehicle. The F([censored])ords have like a fiberglass bed, I think. I also notice that like the doors on the 90-newer chevys feel heavy. I would say that the GM trucks are heavier.
