Chevy Tahoe Troubles

I know it's not a Jeep but this board has always been the most helpful to me. We recently bought the wife a 96 Tahoe to replace her troubled Blazer. After about 2000 miles it has developed a miss at idle in gear. A shift to neutral seems to minimize it but it's still there. After about a week of this now the "service engine soon" light is on. This is a Vortec 350 4x4 with 71,000 miles. Because we just bought it I have no idea what sort of maintenance its had. The plugs/wires etc. seem to be original (although the service interval for plugs is 100K) Can I retrieve "trouble codes" from this vehicle without 20K of test equipment. Assuming I can fix it will the light re-set itself. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also, if anyone can suggest a Chevy Tech board I might try I would appreciate it.
P.S. This is also posted at the ORC Chevy Board

Thanks

Jay, you should be able to get a GM or Ford code reader from your local Auto parts store for $15-$20. MoPar still does it the cool way with no code reader needed /wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif. A FACTORY shop manual should tell you how to reset the light. The Haynes/Chiltons don't let you have that piece of info (what do you want for $15). Back to the problem...it sounds like a vaccum line fell off, or something of that sort. You didn't say if it is a violent shaking miss or just a weak "pop-pop" kind of miss. A vaccum leak would be from the latter, it is somewhere to start anyways. Hope this helped!

Well, this is a Jeep board but since you are a NRA supporter I'll let it slide :p
Your vehicle computer is obd 2 so you need a dealership or a code scanner to erase the code.
When you get that done they can tell you the cause. Some smaller private shops can do it.
With 71k there is a list of things it could be. Neither plugs or wires really last 100k so change them.
also, egr, fuel filter, O2 sensor, clogged injectors, a vacuum leak are all possibilities.

As I said in the previous post, you need a rather expensive scanner to read the obd2 codes.
You will probably have to take it to a shop or buy a scanner. I bet Teamrush would know more
You out there TR?

I have a '96 K1500 (same drivetrain as your tahoe) with 80K on it. I had a slight miss at idle a few K mi ago. First, I cleaned the cap (don't break it, the SFI ones are like $80!), then I cleaned the plugs. This resulted in very little differences. My service engine soon light was coming on for a few minutes a day so I wanted to interpret the code (as you have mentioned), but the code reader for our truck (OBD-2) is $300 to $400 so I just took it to the dealer. They charged me $28 to put it on the computer. It registered a bad O2 sensor. He gave me an est of $200ish and I said no thanks, the bill for $28 is fine. I bought a sensor from the dealer ($100), put it in and that took care of everything. SES light hasn't come on since. BUT, I still had a slightly rough idle!!
Here's what I did next: I took off all that plastic vortec stuff (took 5min) and took a peak into the throttle body. I noitced a bunch of black crud inside stuck to the walls. So I removed the throttle body (about 20 min), took the center flap out and soaked everything with carb cleaner. Ended up looking like new! Put it all back together and it idled smooth and also has a lot more pickup on the bottom end.
hope this helps jay.

Read the flash codes by switching the computer to diagnostic mode. The flash code is the number of times the check engine light blinks when the computer is in the diagnostic mode. The following link will tell you how to set the computer in the diagnostic mode as well as the flash code. I prefer to keep my money than pay a dealer to do such simple task. The dealer has an expensive machine that reads the OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic II) code and actually tells the mechanic exactly what part to replace, part#, etc. You really don't need all that. Good luck!

Thanks for the insight BigEd. Did you re-use the gasgets for the intake? How did you clean the Platinum Plugs? Thump, Thanks for the link but, the westech board has no info for OBDII. My local dealer attempted to shaft me for $1,300.00 for a "warranty" repair last time so even at $28.00 I will NEVER return which is why I must find a way to access diagnostic info without 'em.

Thanx to all
