Hey guys. My jeep is not stable on the off camber stuff.
It is a 63 CJ5 with stock axles.
Well currently i have SOA with stock YJ springs and 3 inch body lift. For of all the body lift will be removed, i only installed it to clear dual fenderwell exhaust, but i am going to go back to single exhaust. I am runnign pizza cutter 34 x 10.50. Also i am running stock wrangler shackles.

I am planning:
1. Remove.. remove remove body lift.
2. goto wider tires. probably 35/36 x 14.50 swampers.
3. goto offset rims.

I want to keep the stock axles, actually i will probably swamp the dana 27 for a 30 eventually. I want to keep it a bit skinny, and money is a factor, plus i have the WARN FF kit in the rear and want to keep it because i flat tow it quite a bit.

If i goto offset rims, how much is too much before the bearings start to get damaged.

I am only runnig a buick V6 motor, so I am not too worried bout breaking.

I am trying to keep it a bit lightweight and nimble.

I plan on hacving to hog out the rear fenders for the 35/36 tires... not a problem, for the front i am making tube fenders for it.

Is there any other tricks i can apply to keep gravity down and keep my jeep a bit more planted. I do nto ride off camber that much at all, but i do goto Tellico and parts north to play. Down this far south in Florida it is mud mud and more mud.

thanks guys!!!!

When you drop the body lift, you will notice a difference.
Do you have a spare mounted high?
When you build the tube fenders, can you extend wheelbase on the front a couple of inches?
The wide tires should help. What width wheels are you running? If it is an 8" rim, maybe a 10"er would help.

The spare is mounted kind of high, i was going to lower it considerably after i got the body lift gone. I am not going to be able to up the front axle any. Right now I am as far as i can go without messing with the tie rods, i would have to move teh steering box forward. I am pondering swapping out the rear springs for offset waggie springs. I think that are the ones that the offset but same length as the wrangelrs.. i may be thinking incorrectly. but that would be something that can be accomplished. Only other thing is that when i get rid of th ebody lift, i will be adding a roll cage also, but i am not sure if it will add a bunch of weight to make it top heavy.

I am hoping the boy lift removal will make it sit better. The tires are 10.50 on a 8 inch rim. I am pondering putting my 16 wide boggers (off the commando) on the CJ but the 10 inch rims wioud probably rub since it just makes it on te commando. But then the tires would have a bit more weight and start breaking stuff. I know i am limited to some stuff because of the axles i want to keep. trial and error.

I have went on my side twice in th elast year. Once in Tellico with my stock 4 inch lift springs (which had no flex)

And the second time was 3 weeks ago goofing on an embankment and i have my soft YJ springs. Given the last time was partly due to my inexperience iwth my new rear locker, it just gripped and gripped and over i went. If i had an open diff i would have been fine

But nonethe less I know i have problems and need to fix them.

Thanks!!!

When I had the CJ5 SOA, I switched to 15x8 (eventually 15x10) rims with with 2.5" backspace, and noticed a difference in how stable it was, never ran into a problem with bearings, but it was trailered most places, and little road driving.
Low and wide is a great combination foir stability.

I think that is a defiante change i need to do, run wider tires and the rim. So I guess i better save up for new meats and rims. The body lift will be removed as soon as I get my T98 rebuilt and installed, because i have other issues to deal with when the body lift comes off.

but thanks for the replys!!!

1. Lower the COG?
2. Hummm... that involves [*]Sprung weight
[*]Unsprung weight
[*]Vector analysis
[*]Perhaps even the "C" word (calculus).
3. Me, I'd keep it simple,
4. And but lots of quick silver in the tires!
5. Perhaps that'd make the greenies angry!
6. But it'd be fun to watch if you broke a bead,
7. And it'd be "Tuna Safe"....
