carter rebuild, any suggestions before restart?

Well, I broke down and bought a rebuild kit, pretty straight forward i guess. The three screws for the top were about worthless though, I broke one and twisted another. I had to use the old ones, I think they had a few turns left in them. I am going to be installing a manual choke but I would like to restart with the automatic one until the weekend. I am pretty sure I got it all cleaned(with carb cleaner) and put all back together correctly however I did not know about how to adjust anything inside, so its up in the air. How do I get the carb bowl filled again? Will I need to pump the pedal or what, I dont want to crank it with no gas in there right? Also, how open should the choke plate be when the engine is cold? And should it be sitting on the fast idle screw step?

Thanks as always

Re: carter rebuild, any suggestions before restart

your first adjustment would be the float level...your rebuild kit should have come with a little paper/plastic ruler, and instructions on what the level should be set at...when doing this, don't measure right at the edge of the bowl - the fuel tends to creep up just like water in a glass...i'm not sure how the carter is for doing this adjustment with the bowl cover off, but you should get it somewhat close before you install the carb...

to fill the bowl, you got it - give it a pump or two of the pedal, and turn it like normal...it may take a bit longer to start the first time, but it will go (though being a carter, you never know
)

when the engine is cold and you step on the pedal the first time, the choke plate should be closed completely, and the fast idle cam should engage (if it's cold in your driveway and you open the hood, the fast idle will NOT be engaged - it does this when you step on the pedal)...as soon as it starts, the choke plate will open just a little bit - i'm not sure on the carter, but follow the rebuild instructions for setting this (the kit for my 2100 had me set it with i think a 3/8 drill bit)...i don't think it matters greatly if it's a bit off - the BBD isn't exactly a piece of precision engineering...

also, while you've got it off and apart, have you seen this?

if it was the one under the little triangular plastic piece on top, that line goes to the charcoal cannister - it's the bowl vent...not sure how your bowl is venting now if it's held closed and doing nothing, and i'm not sure what effect this will have on the behaviour of the carb...

the only way I could get it to start and stay running was but holding the throttle open, keeping the RPMs at about 2k

this makes it sound like your fast idle cam isn't operating properly...double check that once the choke has cooled off and recoiled itself...they can be tricky to set sometimes...also, make sure the choke isn't coming off too fast...
