carter rebuild, any suggestions before restart?

Well, I broke down and bought a rebuild kit, pretty straight forward i guess. The three screws for the top were about worthless though, I broke one and twisted another. I had to use the old ones, I think they had a few turns left in them. I am going to be installing a manual choke but I would like to restart with the automatic one until the weekend. I am pretty sure I got it all cleaned(with carb cleaner) and put all back together correctly however I did not know about how to adjust anything inside, so its up in the air. How do I get the carb bowl filled again? Will I need to pump the pedal or what, I dont want to crank it with no gas in there right? Also, how open should the choke plate be when the engine is cold? And should it be sitting on the fast idle screw step?

Thanks as always

Just out of curiousity.... underneath the carb vent lid, this would be the one held down by three small screws, did you have a little trap door that opened and closed the side vent outlet?

My rebuild kit came with a new round rubber vent cap that is suppose to go onto a hinged pivoting vent/gate. This vent opens when the pump arm is up and closes when the pump arm is down. My vent assembly was missing. I bought a reman carb that never ran right. Besides being virtually thrown together without any adjustments to specs.... It was missing this vent, which kind of alarmed me as well as pissed me off. Anyway... I ended up making the vent assembly to hold the supplied rubber cap/vent. I made it out of stuff I had around the house and some solder. I'll see if I can find a pic of it so you can get a laugh at my not so handywork.

That last pic was of the carb before I got my meathooks on it... without the vent... and this one should be with...

sorry it's kinda blurry.... it does hide it's ugliness... but I'ts very functional and tested with a vacuum pump.

The first time I had a "proffesional" carb man rebuild my carb. He damaged the floats and they filled with gasoline... soon, and I mean very soon, after they filled up they failed to float, once they failed to float, the gas just wanted to come in and join the party.... and the gas kept comin.... and the gas kept comin and comin... soon all the gas filled up their home and decided to overflow to the next home.... which was my exhaust manifold.... I extinguished the party. Check your float. They slightest mishandling can cause an unseen pinhole and lead to a very frightening experience.
