Here is the latest..... This is getting shadier by the minute. The tracking number they supplied to me is bogus...it is of a package that was "delivered" on Sep 25th. I work in Data Processing and I know any data can be keyed in wrong so I will give them the benifit.

I called Carparts.com and talked to a guy who seemed really nervous and kept telling me not to worry.

They said the winch has shipped ... but the funny thing is my card has not been charged.

Hello, I've been lurking for some time now and have found the tone of this forum to be refreshing. The subject of carparts.com certainly caught my attention, since I had just attempted to order a winch from them in October. The equipment was not delivered within any of the several promised times they provided - with no real explanation. The final straw was when they gave me a phony UPS tracking number than turned out to be a 31 pound package that had been delivered two days before they gave it to me. I cancelled my order. The current offer at 1/3 off seemed too good to be true, so I again called them and looked at the web site. I was dismayed to find that, effective "last night" all prices have been increased far more than the 33% discount. In October, an HS9500i was priced at $716. Today, it is $1215/00! With the purported discount, you can buy it for only $809. Also, worth noting (it may be a coincidence), shortly after I ordered from these folks in October, my credit card was used for three unauthorized charges, with two related to Internet transactions and one for a hotel room in California. I had placed my order by telephone. Sorry to be so long-winded, but do watch your credit card bills and for e-commerce business practices. The enforcement folks are behind the power curve on this exploding marketplace.

more stuff....

I tried but as of this morning they changed the prices of all warn winchs. The salesman told me they had a internal mistake and we're loseing over 100$ per winch sold. This sucks i thought i was going to get a new winch.
{snip}

Interesting times ahead. Good luck to all who had ordered.

Bet you thought I was just an alarmist! /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Maybe making the unauthorized charges is how they make up the difference.

BTW - They did say you could/should track your order through the carparts.com page.

Well I didn't order a winch from them, but I ordered all new brake parts for my axle swap.....now I am a little nervous because I used my Visa check card to pay for it and that sucks the cash right out of my checkin account......man I am nervous....but now that I think about it I don't have any money anyway so I guess that they can try and use it if they want!!!!!

This is interesting.

They say mine has not shipped yet, but I am starting to wonder. I will call tomorrow and talk to someone else.

I hope this works out - I will raise heII all over the internet if they don't honor their prices. I have a reciept that says I should be getting a winch for XXX price - they dang well better honor it.

Well I just got a email confirmation from carparts.....i will let everyone know when i get my brake parts.

Well, I just recieved an e-mail from carparts.com saying my winch is shipping out tommorow--it had better. I have print outs of every screen during the ordering process and also have saved and printed the e-mail confirmation and now the e-mail shipping notification. One advantage (the only?) of living just outside of D.C. is that every third person is a lawyer, consequentially one makes many friends who are lawyers. It's gonna get ugly if I don't have my winch within the 4-7 shipping days UPS guarantees...

Hey Larry, thanks for the heads up. I saw a post a few days back, think it was yours. Well I need some seats and if there's a sale, cool! I went to carparts.com and found Bestop seats, just what I'm looking for. But the web site just says "reclining". You probably know Bestop makes seats from about $119 to $250 . Their prices are way off the norm, but without the model name or description I can't tell if they are high or low. I e-mailed them with thier SKU # asking for clarification, but no reply. Are they about to vaporize? Be careful. BTW it's always best to use a credit card in case there is a problem, even if your card has been charged, if you have a legit complaint the card company can reverse the charge. Sound Advise.

From Doug again ----- I am making no comment of the legitimacy or illegitimacy of this company. It appears that some of the posters to this thread may have gotten in touch with some who may have taken advantage of the offer that was made to me, per the above e-mail. I can also see the possibility that a legitimate order to a legitimate dealer may have some extra time involved if two or three layers of people are involved. I saw the well over $1,000 prices for their winches and decided that there was little possibility of sales in that price range. Possibly someone got the above e-mail and decided to try to pass the commissions along to prospective customers and not make anything on the transaction.
Anyway there's what I have to contribute to the situation. And again, for the record, at the time of this writing I have no desire to do business with them from a sales stand point, but I DO NOT HAVE ANY INFORMATION THAT WOULD INDICATE THEY ARE GOOD, BAD, CROOKED OR STRAIGHT.

Re: carparts.com ...PTII READ THIS!!

I think you are confused.

Someone posted a "coupon" link to the carparts.com site. I understand they offer different coupon discoints all the time. Someone posted the link to the "33% off" coupon, and people used this link to make purchases.

To add to this, the prices they had listed for Warn winches seemed to be rather low. Once you figured in the discount to the low prices, the end result was that the sale price was at or below their actual cost.

So, now itt seems the realized their mistake, and upped the winch prices. PErfectly up to them, and within their rights.

The problem I have is if they do not honor the price I was given when I placed my order. Mistake or not, they should honor the price they gave me. Simple as that.

As to the e-mail you got, their affiliate program has little to do with this situation.

Re: carparts.com ...PTII READ THIS!!

Don't know about any confusion. I'm not confused. Not about this anyway. I saw a couple of the posts related to this when the this thread first started. Wasn't interested enough in the thread to keep up with the posts after reading the first couple. Never heard of the organization. Then I got the e-mail that I forwarded to this thread.
As I said before - don't know anything about this organization and only shared the e-mail that I got from them so that it could be added to the cumulative info base - to be used however anyone wanted to use it. Everything might be legit, or it could be a sham. I have no info either way. Way I figure it is to pass around any and all info so that we will know what we are dealing with. Just like the thread dealing with 4WPW. So far all I have heard is negative in relation to carparts, but having no personal experience, I can add nothing but the e-mail.
As for the affiliate program having nothing to do with your situation, I guess that's right, but if there is something shady about the entire deal, then I would say that ALL the info is important, including info about the affiliate program.

Re: carparts.com ...PTII READ THIS!!

First off, let me correct myself - that was supposed to say "I *think* you may be confused". Sorry if I came off accusing you of being off base/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

From what I have seen, the e-mail you got was part of a mass mailing to lots of site owners over the net. I think the coincidence is they are just trying to build business while this is all going on.

I don't *think* they are a shady business - I just think they got caught with some very low prices on an item and people jumped on it. How they handle the whole deal from here on out will tell just how good an organization they are.

Thanks for the input though - you are right, every little bit of info helps.

Re: carparts.com ...PTII READ THIS!!

All this activity - various posts etc - has prompted me to go back to their web site and do a little more research. Still don't know if they are legit or not. Will be interested to hear the outcome of some of the orders involved in this thread of posts. That will be enlightening. There prices on other stuff - not winches - looks to be very competitive, and they have lots of product to sell.
Anyway, buying through "e-commerce" is not only legitimate, it may also be the cheapest and easiest way to shop. Amazon has really kicked off an internet trade deal that works for everyone. I have shopped with them myself and am pleased with the result. No reason we can't buy car stuff the same way.
A big cost of doing business - any business - is the showroom floor and the stocking of merchandise. How much cheaper could a product be if the manufacturer shipped direct to each customer, no retail showroom, no paid sales people, no stocking of product around the country and customers could shop in their underware in front of the computer screen? The internet sales organization takes the order, notifies the manufacturer and the mfg ships direct to the customer.
Don't know how carparts works internally and don't really care. If they can get product to us more cheaply AND reliably, there is no reason not to deal with them.
How 'bout some feed back from people who have had orders delivered???

Re: carparts.com ...PTII READ THIS!!

Well, I called CP today so they could provide me with an accurate tracking number. The person I talked to said that is the number they have and there is no way to get a different number. I started getting angry with this kid...letting him know what is being said about their company across many of the 4x4 forums and that people are going to have a hard time ever ordering from them.

He said he is sorry and they try to accomodate the customer as much as possible. While on the phone with him I decided to check UPS one more time...well, there it is... an 88lb package in route to my house, scheduled for delivery on Dec 3rd. I guess UPS had not updated the info when I checked last night. I did not make a keying error because I did a cut&paste of the number.

So now, Im back to feeling like a million bucks!

Re: carparts.com ...PTII READ THIS!!

Great. Let us know when you get it. What was your total price, if you don't mind saying? I am beginning to think I may have been a bit premature with suspicious thinking about this company. Hope it works out well, 'cause I like the e-commerce system myself.

Re: carparts.com ...PTII READ THIS!!

I should have mentioned this before, but UPS is running behind on their shipments. I took a package (125 lbs) last Wednesday (11-24-99) tu a UPS shipping station and the package did not leave until yesterday. Obviously when I tried to check the tracking number I got an error (website WWW.UPS.COM) If you call UPS (1-800-PICKUPS) and give them the number they'll let you know if it's in route.

I have not purchased anything from CarParts even though I received their 33% discount e-mail, but having a small business myself I can tell you that if I listed a price for an item below cost by mistake, anyone of you guys or gals would be expecting to pay that price. Even if I had made a mistake on listing the item you woul have all wanted to buy it from me at the lower price. In this case I would have to sell it to you at the lower price and lose some bucks, but I would prefer to do that than lose customers. "Customer Satisfaction/Service"

I don't think I will buy anything from CarParts. I actually think that their prices are higher than other places. This is just my opinion.

I'm sure for those of you who ordered you will get your merchandise. I'm sorry for those of us who missed out on the low price for the winch.

Good luck to all.

Re: carparts.com ...PTII READ THIS!!

Doug,

I paid a total of $520.47 for the new HS9500. I had originally ordered the XD9000 for roughly $498. They didnt even have the newer high speed winch shown on their website so I knew nothing about it until someone on another forum called them to see if they sold it....sure enough! I cancelled my orginal order and for $20 more I will have a much better winch.

Check it out here....

Re: carparts.com ...PTII READ THIS!!

OK Guys,

Check this out!
I work for a phone company here in Boston and BeFree is one of my customers.
I nearly fell out of my chair when Isaw the post above referencing them! But they are the largest company
doing online affiliate networking and definately a legitmate third party affiliate company. What they do is
work with companies like Borders and then contact other sites, give them a banner to link to Borders and
and provide a small commission for any sales of customers that pass through that link. They track
EVERY minute detail of what customer do online. They provide reports of who goes where and does
whatever. It's pretty cool! I could say more but this is the net'..........

Anyway I ordered a XD9000 and yesterday and have been told that it takes 48 hours to ship and
that an email will be sent to me with a UPS tracking number. But I called 4 times in a row and
each time a guy (with an accent) placed me on hold and took other calls. I know because when
he placed me on hold I called called another line and GOT HIM AGAIN! Finally I forced the guy
to give me information on my order and he did!

We shall see how the drama unfolds.

Lee

Re: carparts.com ...PTII READ THIS!! - they are the winners if they follow through!

I see it like this:

If they honor their little mistake & send me the winch at the quoted price, I will sure as heck do business with them in the future. I can guarantee they will make their money back in the long run.

I think this is true with all the other people who heard about this. Just think: the CarParts.com site has had more FREE advertising exposure in the last 8 days than they ever could have paid for! Sure they lost some money on the winches, but a LOT MORE PEOPLE now kow about their site! and statistically speaking, at least a portion of these people will buy something! I think they come out the winners after all...

If they don't honor the price they gave me, I will do my best to bash them all over the web. This will also leave a very bad taste in the mouths of all the others who get stiffed on the winch deal - further hurting their web business. What's fair is fair... right?
