In a technical sence all carbs are obsolete and inferior to fuel injection--
If you have lots of $$$ go TBI--
I am doing that to one of my rigs--- and one is all I can afford right now.

For a working class person there are Holleys, and the Rochester/Carter group.
Carter made some Q-jets when Rochester makers were on strike.
Webers are for rich people.

On a 4x4 Rochester /or Rochester clones by Carter are often perfered over a Holley. The Holley is good
for non-bumpy operation-- the Rochester Q( or Carter) jet is better when the terrian is rough.
This has to do with the design of the fuel bowl and how the float bounces around on rough roads.

I have run both and had success with both. I have run many a smallblock on a Holley 2300 series 500 cfm model.
I have never run a Holley double pumper on a 4x4--- scared of flooding and scared of engine fires that could result.

I run a Rochester Q jet on my sbc 350 in a 1986 3/4 ton 4x4-- and it is OK--- and Just OK and not GREAT.

If I had the $$$ I would just TBI my 3/4 Chevy 4x4-- it would get better milage-- smoother power--- oil stay cleaner
and all that good stuff. But it would end-up being a couple of thousand bucks by the time I was done.

Luckily Full-sized trucks went from reliable carbs straight to fuel-injection. With no 1980ish era E-carbs.
I just got my truck because it the previous owner junked it due to a small engine fire
Nevertheless the carb was not hurt!------ But just in case, I bought a couple extra Q jets from the junk for
20 bucks(both).

I might still get an expensive Edelbrock because they are usually good to go right out of the box.
If you get a Carter clone then you have to jet it-- though often much cheaper than an Edelbrock.

an Edelbrock costs 3-4 hundred dollars--- a Carter AFB a couple hundred.

So I would rank fuel systems
as Best being a TBI conversion

next best for convience would be an Edelbrock (but expensive) ( 450 bucks)
Really good would be a Carter AFB-- but you have to hastle with jetting it for your truck-- but just copy Edelbrock jet and meter rod specs. (250 bucks)

If you are not doing much off-roading a Holley will also work OK-- and very good on the street.(Could get a good used Holley 500cfm -2300 series for $100)

If you are short on cash get a Junk Yard Rochester of a Truck simular to the one you have--- and put a $30
rebuild kit in it and hope that it is jetted right. Of if you are broke just bolt it on and run carb/injector cleaner in your tank.($50 investment or less)

If "all carbs" in a "technical since" are "obsolete", then why haven't those high tech, big bucked nascar boys switched yet. Hmmmm Don't take this wrong, I'm not picking on injections. They both have their pros and cons. Injected motors on average do run better but then ya got a junk computer on board. And as to the carb flooding over on ya, that's not a problem, we can fix that. I just thought the wording was a little harsh and premature. After all we have done alot of swaps, except the complete opposite of what your suggest. We've thrown away the TBI and put a carb on it. But then after all..........I'd rather be blown than injected! ha ha

Carbs are inexspensive, compared to fuel injection. Any carb will need work to work in extreme angles. I have my Holley working pretty good right now, but if I stall at a good angle, up or down, or sideways, I can't get it restarted. The Edelbrock ( Carter clone ) isn't any better, IMHO. If you have the $, go with an Edelbrock Q-jet, it is still $400 cheaper than FI minimum. If you are on a budget get a Q-jet and rebuild it for less than $30. THe Q-jet is the best off road carb because of its central fuel bowl. Don't waste your time or money with off road neadle and seat, They are a waste of money, unless you do a lot of high speed, rough off roading.

Thanks, Ray

i just wanted to set the story strait.. when ssr driver said
"For a working class person there are Holleys, and the Rochester/Carter group.
Carter made some Q-jets when Rochester makers were on strike.
Webers are for rich people"

he was wrong.... if you were to buy a NEW rochester or an edelbrock(carter afb) then what you are buying is a weber! weber now manufactures both carbs under an agreement with edelbrock ( the current pattent holder for both the afb and the quadrajet)

WARNING: DRIVER HAS ATLEAST $50 WORTH OF AMUNITION!
