Can\'t stop:Need Help

My 1992 YZ250's rear brake is giving me some trouble. The brake seems to have no "feel" or modualtion to it. It locks up extremely easily. I've changed the pads and flushed and bled the system. Maybe the cylinder or the caliper needs a rebuild? The piston action "seems" ok. Thanks in advance.

Re: Can\'t stop:Need Help

Good question. I assume that the wheel turns freely when the brake is released so it would seem that the most likely thing would be the entire caliper is twisting and/or binding when the brake is applied?? I can think of a bunch of Oakie fixes, (reducing the size of the pads by grinding them off, etc.) but obviously something is wrong. What happens if you drag the brake on a hard surface at speed (like pavement), still lock up?? Let us all know when you figure it out. Good Luck

Re: Can\'t stop:Need Help

JDDick, thanx for the input. The wheel rotates freely and the disc is not warped. Yes it locks up pretty easily on pavement also. Another moto guy said that some of the older braking systems were like this. The bike is a 92'. I'd hate to grind down my new pads. The caliper is secure on the mount. Maybe my foot is too heavey. Maybe it's more the panic in my eyes to stop than it is the brake]ing action. Going to the track today so we will see. Good Luck to you all!!

Re: Can\'t stop:Need Help

Hey, Wise, I had a problem just like that awhile back. I tried to bleed it, etc, but it didn't help. After looking closer I found a small "booger" in the compensating port on the master cyl., so I removed and dismantled the cylinder, cleaned all the parts and reservoir. After that it worked fine. Good luck, Bob

Re: Very funny guys

Hey, you guys are some very funny guys! Maybe I should have asked my grand daughter to help me..... the compensating port is the pressure relief port in the master cyl. and allows the piston to fully return. Not recommended for the John Deere but maybe for the bad boy XR, and I could definitely use one in the rear area of my anatomy......:)

Re: Can\'t stop:Need Help

I don't even have disk brakes in the rear. I have drum in the back on my YZ, but i took the front end off an 85' RM-125. It had disk brakes. The problem was, I put them on with out any fluid in the resivoir. SO I put the bike together and I rode to the store. I was rippin down the trail and hit a a puddle of water going too fast. I flipped over the handle bars, and my hose got ripped in half. I rode the bike home and I ended up taking the whole bike apart for the winter. I am getting ready to put it back together. I have a new hose, but what are the chances of something being wrong with the brake cylander of caliper?
