posting from my old laptop tonight...Can't post from my other machine.

I can send PM's, it recognises my password...but when I hit the continue button after writing a reply I get "The server you are sending from is not valid"

I'm running Winders XP and have shut down all of the security stuff, accepting all cookies...to no avail.
I have a Linksys router with a wireless card in my box. I disabled my firewall, and still no change.
I'm using Norton A/V & internet security...I think this is the problem, but I can't find a setting to change that would make this the problem.

Anybody have any thoughts? (besides, finish the Linux box, and dump all this Windoze mess).

Thanks,

I would think that you can now go in and make exceptions to allow the traffic that was blocked and keep your Personal Firewall up and running while still posting to the BBS.

There should be logs from when you couldn't post.... good place to start.

It's a tricky world isn't it.

Yup, that's what I'm trying to do now...testing testing testing...

One word on how to fix this whole mess: Linux

It's the next "mod"

It's all about who's paying the most...

My brother works for Red Hat...so Linux is making a larger financial impact for him.

Mostly I'm tired of all the garbage that you have to mess with to keep your puter safe from idiots and bad hackers. For now atleast they tend to target Windoze boxes...and don't tend to mess with Mac's or Linux as much...

Will return to the Linux world when it makes a larger financial impact.

You mean like charging extraordinary high prices for unstable software full of bugs, security holes, and sloppy code?

Or when Linux starts stealing other peoples idea's or just buy out the competition. Billy boy used to laugh at Linux but now that they have taken over most of the web servers out there he's not laughing much any more.

Because Mac and Linux doesn't have all the bugs, security holes, and sloppy code.

The other interesting thing is most all of Microsoft's competition that they couldn't buy out (Mac, Novell, etc) is embracing Linux because of it being secure and stable.

I make my living with computers too and Windows is part of that but that doesn't mean I have to like Winblows that much and not look at Linux. As a matter of fact I like seeing Linux evolve, grow, and slowly but surly give people a quality, secure, and affordable alternative to MS products.

I use a mix on my home network to keep my windows boxes secure:

Internet <---> Freesco (linux router) <---> Linux firewall/proxy/content filter built from scratch (source code) <---> Windows & Linux boxes

On the other networks I take care of everyone has a Linux firewall to keep the Windows boxes safe. I think the add on software firewalls are a waste of time and money by the time they block anything the hacker is already on the network/computer. In my setup they have to hack through 2 other computers to get to the network or even see my computers.

I too have made my living supporting Windoze systems for the past 15-20 years and worked with M$ OS's before Windows 1.1 was released. More and more I find myself crippled (hobbled, roped into using...uhoh...they have their hand out *again*!
) by their stupid ploys & marketing strategies and I for one have had enough!

The other folks I work with & I have decided to give Mr.Gates the boot and move our entire enterprise to Open Source (you know, the stuff that's been around for years longer than M$...doing a better job of providing apps, being more stable, and best of all....FREE!
). We figured out there actually *IS* more finacial benefit in moving to Linux!! ... M$ licensing to make our email server redundant = $75,000! (not to mention the hardware = $30,000 needed to run the new 2k3 OS = $15,000, or the upgraded desktops to run the latest fluff ie .Net = $75,000). Who knows, one of the "bean counters" may actually notice the near $200K annual savings when we pack up the M$ disks and store them away (forever!) and channel some My way.

As for who's "doing the lions share"...I guess it would depend on whether you believe all the hoopla M$ (
) is floating. I was right there with you brother! Thinking the only way to make a living was to hop on their crappy bandwagon, endorse their junk, become "certified" to operate it (BTW, those certs are a joke to anyone in the IS/IT industry...other than pointy haired managerial types that have no clue how to actually do it themselves)...the whole ball of wax. Step out of the box they've conveniently built around you and sniff the real money!Admins of 44 MILLION web servers must know something Billy G. ain't telling.... FWIW, I have all my M$ "paper" (MCSE NT & 2K, MCP, blah, blah, blah) hung in the bathroom..."In case of emergency, break glass".

I too am a system engineer in a windows environment. I say Microcrap is a god sent. Thank god there systems are so unstable, its called "JOB SECURITY" I could care less if it works or not, as long as i'm making what i'm making. Think about it, if everyone switched to a perfectly stable environment, most of us would be out of our jobs. I smile every time I see my company spend millions on Microsoft.

I ran Slackware for a while with vmware to run winblows in the background. It took me almost a whole year to finaly get the hang of how to secure it and to get the bag to finaly compile a kernal. I decided to go back to windows just do to the point of convenience. This was all around 8 years ago and I dont know how linux stacks up now but I wouldnt mind one of these days taking a poke at freeBsd.
