ok, i just got my new unit bearings today and want to replace them this weekend
one of the hubs is seized onto the knuckle like cement

now that i have a new bearing and knuckle (knuckl just in case)

can i heat the knuckle with a torch to remove the bearing without changing the strength of it from the heat

AKA will heating the knuckle make it weak?

The hubs don't touch the knuckle bud. If you mean the spindle is stuck to the knuckle, thats normal. Yes you can heat it, just spread the heat around. You can jack the axle up and put a wood block under the spindle and smack the knuckle with a hammer, and it might come free also.

Err unit bearings ? Is this a hubless model ? either way, you can heat it.

***** Yes they do, this is a YJ, the hubs/bearings are one piece (unit bearing) and it sits in the hole of the knuckle and usually gets seized in there

**** I broke 2 slide hammers on this thing and wanted to get a spare knuckle before i went further with it

The flange isn't that deep into the knuckle, maybe 1/4 inch (I'm assuming the design is the same as a Cherokee). Here's the obvious ?- did you soak it with penetrating oil?

I remember beating mine out with a small sledge from the back side. Smack the wheel flange from behind and it will shake loose.

As far as heating you're not likely to change the properties of the knuckle if you "warm" it, I'd be concerned if you got it cherry red.

I've tried all the tricks and what worked for me is a sledge and a sharp chisel. There are 3 access holes on the dust shield where you can see where the hub and the knuckle meet up. I put the chisel in there and whacked it one hole at a time. Once it gets moving it comes out easy. You won't really booger much up exept the shield. I just bent it back and it's fine.

Darn, I just saw what stuff you're looking for on your page. There is a nice red late model YJ in the local yard with the right roll bar and a pair of nice half doors with soft uppers that wold fit the bill perfectly. Too bad you're up there.
