I going to put gears in my transfer case and was wondering if the 5.14's would be too low for the size tire I'm running. I'm currently running a 29 inch tire but may go up to a 32 max in the future. How fast could I go in 5th on the road and stay under 5k rpm's ?

Holy crap. I guess I'll go with the 4.16 gears. I assume you were were talking about high range and not low.

being geared too low is a good problem to have. can always be fixed with larger tires

when tax return show up, my wife will be ordering those 5.14:1 gears from calmini as long as they have a set in stock...otherwise it will be trailtough's $399 4:1 gears.

the best part of installing your own t-case gears is you will know everything was installed correctly and if a bearing is showing wear, you can simply replace it. when buying a used case with crawler gears already installed, who knows what you may be getting

Would the 4.16:1 gears be okay for 31 inch and under tires ?
I've never rode in a sami with anything other than stock gears. Do the 4.16's make a big difference ? Maybe I don't need the 5.12's as long as I don't plan on going any bigger than a 31 or 32 inch tire. What do ya'll think.

if you're going to go as high as 32s I'd go with the 4.89 or maybe TTs new 4.9:1. For 30s or less the 4.16 is a good choice, but any larger tires with those gears and you will be losing all the fun of the crawliness and missing some of the regained power on the street, too.

I have 4.89 and 30" tires, it is a tiny bit overgeared for the street but it rocks on the trail. I'll be on 31s as soon as I get a tad more lift (from the coil setup) and the 4.89 gears should be just right at that point. Depending on what I decide to do with the rig (go for trail only or keep it streetable at all) I would go for R&P next (5.12 tracker/kick hybrid stuff) rather than just going for even deeper Tcase gears.

do yourself a favor and read this before you do anything.

I think I'm going to get the 4.16's. Will I start having problems with the mounting arms or anything with these gears and 31 inch or smaller tires ?

A little different, as I have 5.12 axles in my Tracker, but 35's too.

I put in the 4.39 t-case gears - great when it gets real rough or steep, but most of the time I find myself in 3rd or 4th gear in low range. Sure would be nice to have something between low 5th and high first, they are a looong way apart.

conventional wisdom suggests that you upgrade your mounting arms when you go to lower gears and bigger tires. a good solution is one of the integrated mounting arm/skid plate things like the Forrest Bucket or Mighty Kong. I have a MK and I like it very much. The type like these that cradle the Tcase help strengthen the case itself so you reduce potential breakage to the case in addition to avoiding twisted mounting arms.

There's also an ongoing debate about whether poly Tcase mounts or stock rubber ones are better. Some folks say the Poly mounts are better becasue they wont tear as easily, while some folks say the stock rubber mounts are better because they allow more stretch and may give out before something more expensive breaks.
