I tend to become pretty self centered when reading these posts. When the topic isn't about something I am interested in, or concerned about, I usually don't retain much. SO, My appologies for this post.

I friend is looking at purchasing a YJ. The two he islooking at are a 92 w/4cyl & 5spd with 3:73's, everything pretty much stock. The other is a 91 with the 4.0. He has driven the 92 and is very impressed. He has not had the opportunity to do anything but look at the 91 from a distance. Can anyone shed some Pros and Cons on either of these two rigs? Trannies or possible trannies? What T-case is in these? What is the comotion with the D35? How about swapability of the 4 cyl for a 6? Your thoughts on lifts with either of these? Any personal observations anyone would like to throw in, would be appreciated. I realize thishas been beat to death numerous times in the past, but I got this call tonight, tomorrow they go look at the 91. The guy is holding the 92 for him right now.

Thanks, jfralph, 86 cj-7

first off.. how much modification is he going to do and when? i would go with the 4.0, really good motor.. 4 cyl just suck.. unless you are going to swap it out for something.. d35 rear axle in both.. sucks... transfercase is the 231 in both.. not bad.. trannies in both probably suck.. they seem to flex really well compared to the cj's.. springs are a bit softer and longer... but personally i would go with the six to start.. 4.0 has the fuel injection on it and everything.. good place to start with a jeep..

All else being equal, go with the six.
Everybody I know with a 4 banger wishes they had more motor, and nobody with a 6 swaps in a 4.
In my neck of the woods 6's are priced 2-3K more than the 4's.
My personnal rule of thumb is, too much is better than not enough.
Here in Jeepnutland we run four 4.2's, one 4.0,and one carbed 2.5. The 4 banger really is gutless, but it is the best in the snow because of it's low but predictable power output.

I think the 4 cyl & 5 spd will do OK unless you want huge tires on it. My 95 4 cyl/ 5 spd/ K&N and air restrictors removed/ Borla catback/ 4.10s (I thought all the 4 cyls had 4.10s) and 235/75R15 runs great and gets 18 mpg city. The trannys are different. If you want to replace the 4 cyl with a 6 cyl, the 6 cyl tranny is recommended. The transfer case might have different input shafts between the 4 cyl and the 6 cyl also.

If you think you will need the 6 cyl, buy it upfront and don't mess with the 4 cyl.

Will a 4.0 six bolt up to the 4 cyl. bellhousing? How about motor mounts? The reason he is leaning towards the new Yj with the 4 cyl is a $3400 difference in price for basically identical vehicles. Any comments on interchangeablility is appreciated.

Thanks, jfralph

I don't have any personal experience, just what I've seen posted. My understanding is that the 4 cyl tranny is not strong enough for the 6 cyl, but it might bolt up. They both use the 231 transfer case, but the 4 cyl tc might have a different input gear.

The 4 cyl seems OK for lots of people, the biggest complaint seems to be from people that run big tires without changing gear ratios. Some people recommed buying the 4 cyl because it comes wth 4.10 gears, and using the money you save to install a V8 (with a stronger tranny).

Try searching previous posts, you might get some more definite answers.

The 4 cly transmission is a very poor trans, it will not hold up to a six. I hvae known many who have torn the trans with minor wheeling. The six is a way better machine, its worth the extra money. If not why is the 4 cheaper, nobody wants it.
