I was rear ended last month. I was able to have the bumper straightened without the chrome cracking, and saved myself a lot of money by not shipping it out to be re-pressed, etc. When my friend straightened it, he DID NOT heat it up, but I am still concerned about the strength of the bumper. Your thoughts?

Suzster Once anything is bent, it will bend along the same plain MUCH easier the next time. So those mounts are not going to be as strong as they were originally. Whether are not this will ever be a problem is impossible to tell.

Suzypoozie,
Your/our original bumper mounts are weak at best. I was being honest and a bit sarcastic. For original bumper strength protection, I would not worry about replacing the stock mounts. Vehicles of our era were not really designed to withstand impacts of particular speed nor impact (as they are today). Your mounts will bend if hit, no matter what. If you really beef them up, then you will just transfer the impact of any crash further up into the frame and closer to the driver's compartment.
Get your stuff straight, make your taillights bright, and drive defensively. That's the best advise I have to offer.
Good luck!
