Bug Steering Question

Hi Folks,

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but I admit I know nothing at all about VW bugs or dune buggies. I was wondering what kind of steering is used in these vehicles. Is it rack and pinion steering or conventional box type steering? If it is rack and pinion steering, how does it hold up with longer travel while running through and jumping the dunes? Is there a way to beef up the rack and pinion steering?

Thanks for any info. Take care,

it has a regular steering box setup with some fairly small components but they seem to hold up pretty good. if you want to beef up a dune buggy's steering i recommend a wright rack and pinion, they are super simple and very strong, but very hardcore. why do you ask?

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the reply and suggestion on the Wright rack and pinion rack. The reason why I asked is because I have a truck (Tacoma) with rack and pinion steering and was looking for ideas on beefing it up, assuming that's possible. I had heard rumours that dune buggies used rack and pinion steering, but I was not sure if the rumours were accurate. Since dune buggies are usually built to handle the abuse of off-roading, I thought I could apply, if possible, any strengthening/beefing-up techniques that may be applied to a dune buggy's steering system.

Thanks again and take care,

A bigger tie-rod ends is one of the upgrades.

Thanks for the reply, SteelyDEL. Should they be custom made out of chromoly? What about wheel travel? Are the lower ball joints the only components being stressed by the wheel travel? Would heim joints help in place of lower ball joints?

Thanks again and take care,

Hi BooRunner
They sell aftermarket crome molly tie rods.
Or you can buy steel tubing to slide over stock rods and weld on.
I've also heard of using the upper and lower control arms(Torsen arms?)off a thing.
supposed to be stouter, though harder to find.
Also seen a sagnaw box used but lots of mods needed.

Hi RJ,

Thanks for the information. Do you know what companies sell aftermarket chromoly tie rod ends? That steel tubing slide-on idea is a good idea, too.

Take care,

Hi BooRunner
I think BugPack,I can't remember who else does.Latest Rage maybe?
Also cruise through Hot VW's and Dunebuggys and look through the adds for price comparison.
