Has any one changed the boot on the lower intermediate steering colum on a "80 CJ 7 ? Mine is cracked ,I have the new boot but I am not sure if the part that collapses needs to be broken apart to get the boot on and if so How do you replace the plastic inserts ?

You don't need to collapse the steering shaft. There is some flex in the lower joint. First take off the top where it hooks to the steering column, then take off the clamp at the botttom. Take the bolts all the way out. You will probably have to tap it off with a punch and hammer. I couldn't figure out how to reuse the clamp it had on it, so I put a small hose clamp on mine and trimmed the end off the clamp so it wouldn't get caught on the power steering lines when I turned the steering wheel.
