Thought I would let you know of my failure. Being the fool (or newbie) that I am, I felt convinced that I could fix the blowby socked filter on my 88 4.0 XJ. I did not want to go with a puke tube but wanted to keep it stock, trap the oil without soiling the filter. I cleaned out the lines .....stil oil on filter. I cleaned out the valve cover/PCV ...still oil in filter although less. I created my own inline catch made from off the shelf PVC fittings...still oil on filter but even less. I have come to the conclusion that the problem is less with oil blowby and more with water vapor that condenses in the line because I think the long hose to the breather box serves to cool the air in the line. At any rate, I still get junk on my filter. Final solution? One mason jar into which I stick the hose and plug off the outlet on the breather box.
I come humbly before you, a newbie who did not know his ways. Journeymen, addicts, and even poo bahs told me to go with a puke tube. But I ignored their advice. Forgive me.
Now to go drink a beer (it makes everything better) and watch the Fiesta Bowl. GO K-State. I

To be honest: I accepted the blowby in my XJ, but was hoping you came with a solution no one else had thought off......

With only 60# compression, I know I need a ring job, but in the interim, I have to deal with major blowby.
I increased the tube size on the rear CCV to 1/4", so I suck a lot more oil into the manifold. I also added a 2 stage puke bottle in line on the breather hose. I used 2 1 quart clear palstic paint bottles with the lids epoxied together. The oil dumps into the bottom half and the breather sucks out of the top half through a filter screen, (sponge filter from an aquarium). I don't clog my filter any longer and trap about 1 liter every hundred miles, which gets poured back into the crankcase.
Oh yeah. Squeeze the sponge to get all the excess oil out whenever the bottle gets emptied, just like the breather on your dirt bike.

Stump Breaker,
I did replace the whole vacumn line assemblies. In fact, I did it per your suggestion about 6 months ago. While it helped, it did not solve the problem.

.oO(Scratching head and looking puzzled) Per my suggestion? That's strange since I didn't even have a 4.0 6 months ago and only found that link about two months ago. I really got to lay off the wine I guess. Anyway, glad I could be of help (I think)

Before I got my rebuild, I had to deal with ~1-1.5 quarts spewing out in a matter of ours on the interstate. It was really starting to make me angry, so I made a catch can, and ditched the line to the airbox. I can draw up something if you want, but it worked well. It was a soup can with a barbed fitting in the side for the tube coming from the valve cover, and a breather stuck in the top. Every now and again I would just have to empty the little can.
