I have a 2000 sport and I am running 30x9.50R15 Bridgestone Revos on the stock rims. The only rubbing I get is up front at full wheel lock on the lower control arms, otherwise I have no rubbing issues. Keep in mind that this XJ is a daily driver so I don't know about any off road tire rubbing.
Budget boost would be your nest step up. Consists of spacers for the front and usually an add-a-leaf for the rear. Do a search under "budget boost" or "bb" on this site. Otherwise, manufacturers like Rubicon Express and Rusty's Offroad might be good starting points.
