Just got my 4" x 4" x 1/4" steel today for my rockers, and I will be starting this project tonight. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

What is the best way to protect against rust in the back against the tub? There is little-to-no rust there now. I have sanded and primed whatever little there was around the YJ side step bolt holes.

I was thinking of using that rubberized undercoating stuff when I bolted them up, or just leaving them with nothing, and squirting a boatload of WD-40 down there every so often to help keep the rust at bay.

Any thoughts on this one? I should finish them up over the long weekend. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif They are already cut to 4 foot lengths. I just need to add the holes, and sand and paint.

What I did was paint the back side of the angle iron real good, made sure the body paint was still there, and used silicon in the bolt holes. I just make sure I hose off up underneath if I get in mud. Of course, rust isn't a problem around here, but I don't want to tempt it either. I recommend AGAINST using one of those rubberized undercoatings, if they work away from the surface then they hold moisture and CAUSE rust.

I am going to herculiner 1/8" from the top edge of the 4x4 on the tub. I will take care and get any rust out of the way and rough up the factory paint. Then use some regular enamal(sp?) for the paint over the already primed angle iron, both in and out of the angle iron. They can be easily toughed up.

I got the fab shop to cut and prime two 5 ft. pieces of 4x4 angle iron and will make carboard templates around the flares that will be installed later this week. Then tranfer the cardboard templates to the primed angle iron and cut the shape out with the trusty bandsaw. reprime the ends and paint black. Then space out some holes and drill.

I will put on a set of the foldable steps and a backing plate on the inside of the tub.

I should finish up this project soon and hope post some pics then of the whole process.

Jason described what I did to mine. I have Herculined the tub behind the rockers and used Hammerite paint on the inside and outside of the angle iron. I welded a small piece of flat stock to the top of the angle iron to provide backing for top bolt of the folding steps.

OK, thanks guys! /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif I will stay away from the undercoating stuff, paint them real good, and seal the holes with sealant. That way I can remove them too if I want to check for rust.

Lined them up last night, looks good - should start marking and drilling holes on Wednesday night.

Skip, that step will hang you up on the rocks big time, is it removeable.

You're right Brad, they do hang me up at times. The stupid part is I decided to use the buttonheads to avoid the bolts getting caught on the rocks. Then I had to remember that these steps were laying around and thought they could be handy, but they're more of a nuisance. They're pretty tough but there are times when I just unbolt them and remove them prior to getting into the rocks.

Pete , at Off Your Rockers I know they say to run a bead of silicone around the outside of thier corners to keep stuff out .

Snowtow, yours are the ones that I am actually planning mine around. You have a nice clean installation.

We have mostly mud around here, so no worries about hanging up. Just drag it though. Then again I can always just take them off.

I know of two products for dealing with rust. POR-15 (www.por-15.com) and hammerite paint. I have used the POR-15 and so far it's been very effective. I haven't tried the hammerite yet, but have bought a quart at Home Depot and will be painting it on before long.

Anyway, if you paint both surfaces with POR-15 before you put them together, you will not have any rust problem at all. Read the instructions carefully.

I couldn't agree more with putting a bead of silicone around the perimeter of the angle iron.
We all drive in inclement weather and in areas where most other 4x4 don't and we come
across all hazards that can reek havoc to the metal underneath that we hold so dear.
These includes dust, ,snow, mud and water crossings, some even thru the surf. This
stuff WILL work its way into every nook and cranny and if you don't seal against it, it
will eventually turn to rust. It's cheap insurance to invest $5 on a fresh tube of silicone
and use the whole thing up on a pair of rockers between them and your iron protectors.
You'll see the stuff ooze and squeeze out when you tighten the screws (hopefully not
too much) then just run your finger along the edges to seal them up good. Be sure to
remove the burrs from where you cut them first.
You won't regret it!

Personally, I wouldn't recommend using the silicon underneath or around the edges. You are going to end up with the same problem you would have with using rubberized undercoating, trapping moisture. You need to be able to let the moisture OUT, not trap it.
