Bearing repack questions

I've repacked the wheel bearings and spindle bearings in my 84 and 86 CJ front Dana30, usually every 20,000miles. The CJ factory and Chiltons manuals says nothing about bearing repack in the rear AMC20, though I've had to replace the outer axle seals twice. My first question is, do the rear bearings need to be repacked in the AMC20? Now the 86 CJ came from the factory with a Dana44 rear, and I'm having trouble locating a repair manual that has the wide track D44 used for late model 86 CJ's. My second question is, do the bearings need to be repacked in this rear D44, 86CJ? If so, are there any repair manuals out there? Thanks.

The axles you have, only need to be packed upon assmbly. After that, they basically are greased by the rearend fluid. With your tires off and the jeep on jack stands, put it in gear and watch the rear axles. From my experience (not to say yours is) the axles were slightly twisted and caused the seals to go out from being out of round.Look for wobble in the axle flange before you go and waste the time of putting new seals in it.Like I said though, that is just my experience.

Yes I've noticed that diff fluid does work its way out to the ends of the axles, when it ends up on the brake drum and shoes then it's time to replace the seals! If it just runs a little amount down the outside of the backing plate then I just check the fluid once/year. I didn't think the fluid is really bad for the axle bearings, but I didn't think it was especially good either - after all they're packed with grease and not fluid!
