I have a 44 in the back of my cj and the bearings came upart. I pulled the shafts and was wondering the best method for getting the races out of the housing? Are there any tricks? I was thinking I might need to get a puller of some sort so I do not scar the inner tube. Thanks for any input.

Oh yeah, WHat are the best axle bearings?
TIA

if your lucky they will come out with a slide hammer and a 3 jawed puller, if they are really siezed in there, Ive used oil, heat, and a a 26 OZ straight claw estwing framing hammer to pry them out, some sandpaper then needed to remove the burrs left on the mounting flange from prying, but NO burrs on the sealing area..

good luck, its ALOT of fun

on my 9", we used the ox-acetyl torch to cut and heat the race up, mostly just scored the race deeply, then used a cold chisel to spin the race. This freed it up enough to take a claw hammer (with a straight claw, not a curved 'standard' claw) and rocked the race out.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif My moonguy-in-chief/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gifof all gearing told me his shop-tested secret and here it is: FIRST he gets a coke.....he likes the glass-bottle cokes....says they have more "kick'....THEN he gets the welder and he runs a nice warm bead all around the inner diameter of the race. THEN he drinks the coke and ratchet-jaws with the crew while the piece cools off. THEN he takes a cotter pin tool and just picks it right out of there, Heat-cool-shrink.....that's the secret. When you heat something in a contained space, it compresses, and when it cools it will shrink back farther than it was. welding is easier and a more even heat-up process than using a torch./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif
