Hi guys,

Long time no here. I have an issue with my Jeep. It started to shake. Shake dangerously shaky. When I reach 55MPH at the highway the steering wheel vibrates and the whole front end is about to fall apart. Ok..maybe not that bad, but still it vibrates badly. And it comes from the font. What should I start with?

Finaly I'm going to move to my own house with a garage so I'll have a place to play with my Jeep. I make a lot of miles on the highway and it seems like I'll be doing even more this summer. Please help. Mario.

Hey Mario!

Believe it or not, I was thinking about you today; I saw a City of Phila 2wd Cherokee going down the street.

I think that your front has a trackbar like a 4wd model has. What you are describing is the exact thing that my defective trackbar ballstud caused in my Cherokee. The trackbar prevents the front axle from moving too far from side to side.

If you look under the front on the driver side, you should see a bracket bolted to the frame rail. From under the bracket, the trackbar goes to the other side of the axle. Check to make sure that the frame rail 4 bolts/nuts are tight. Tightened them if they're not. Then grab the bar and give it a good push and pull. If it is sloppy, then you've found your vibration. You will then need to replace the bar. Good Luck!!/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

hey,

do what xj173 said, and you can also check it another way. Grab a buddy to look at your front end it you want. Start the jeep and just leave in in park/neutral then spin the steering wheel slowly side to side (about a half turn) If your body moves before the wheels do, your track bar is junk. What i mean is if you can feel the front end going from side to side, and the wheels barely turning then replace the trackbar.

The track bars (stock) run about $60-90. At this point you might as well shell out the money to get an adjustable one, just for the hell of it, it will help a lot as well. OK so i have the Rubicon one, Scram does to and he might be able to atest to this- THEY WEAR OUT QUICK. i know that we had a bitch of a winter, and my heim joint on the trackbar is already gone, after only 5000mi! the heim itself costs $40 from RE. I don't really want another one if they go that fast. Rusty's is now making an adjustable one that uses the same type of mount as the bottom part does (unlimited downward movement and flex). Also the thread is longer to acomidate up to a 6-7" lift RE's will only accompidate a 4.5" lift (to small for me, and scram as well.) They are both the same price. There are also ones made by JKS, which is self adjusting (i wouldn't trust it) and one by tera flex (NON REPLACIBLE END!) hope this helps man, let us know if you need anything else.

Check out all you tie rod ends, and make sure your control arms are tight too. When was your last alignment/ tire balance? Check those too.

Later,

Todd

Todd brings up a good point; check the entire front end. I got my replacement trackbar from the Jeep dealer....$112.00. It has a greasable ballstud. Buy one new, either stock or adjustable; don't trust one that came from the junk yard. It might not have a lot of life left in it./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

PS, your XJ has a lift, an adjustable one would be a better one to get./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

xj173,

i'm still working the kinks out. What one tie rod end i had with the 1/2" of play at the wheels...It helped to chage that finally! i have 2 left to change that'll be this weekend. I got the poly caps for all the tie rob ends (no change.) God knows whats gonna happen when i got to 7" (only 2 more peices to get!!!) maybe scram and i can get together and takes turns kicking each others jeeps! lol.
BTW check this out on ebay, its a REAL brochure for the cherokee freedom. Pretty cool eh?
