Anyone here build one?
Got any plans?
How much does it cost to build one yourself?
What motor/ clutch?
What axle?

Did any lawn tractor's come with a front drive axle for a 4x4 application?

I've been to most of the sites that google brings up, they are all trying to sell me stuff. I'm looking for unbiased reports.....

I'm thinking about buying the plans for this design..... they are only $10. Just not sure what I should expect as a total investment on something like this.

Also thought I could do something in 4x4 but can't find a narrow front drive axle/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

you could get 4x4 by fabbing up your own steering knuckles....get some small u-joint yokes that you can weld onto a shaft, put that on the same axis as the steering so it doesnt bind up.....

it would be easiest to run the front like a spool, otherwise you'd have to find a reallly small differential, take off the ring gear, weld on a sprocket....use the axle shafts for the spines only, drill down into the splined stub, insert and weld in your own axles... grease the dif heavily, install a piece of steel to protect it, and you if it breaks, and keep grease from flying.......go! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ok, I've heard of Formula 1, Indy Racing League, Can-Am Series, World of Outlaws, NASCAR & all their divisions, Go Carts, Motorcycles, Snow Mobiles, Quads, Lawnmowers BUT this is a new one on me.
Tell me more!
Is there a Web site?

Center of gravity is too high to be moving on something that, when I sit on it, seems to decrease my balance /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I thought about trying to fab up a 4wd from an old lawnmower then making a small Jeep body for my kiddos some day, but my list of projects keeps growing as my time to do them shrinks.

Total investment? my guess...about $1,000.

Engine will be the most expensive. Speed costs money. You could find a new 3.5ho briggs for about $200-250, or get a 5hp or more...thats more money. I've been looking at the diesels for my next go-kart. They're pricey...$700-1000 for the smallest ones...

The frame...I'd use some good DOM tubing. probably 1.25" OD, 1/8" wall. The wheels and tires you see in the pics arent cheap. Figure EASILY $500+ for a set like that. You could use some "yard kart" style wheels and tires for probably under $200--wheels, tires, bearings. Figure another $100 for a good brake setup--disk! The that torwue converter you see there is $120-$150. Plus hardware, welding materials, various odds and ends, AND THE BARSTOOL? Definitely over a grand to do it right with all new parts...but if you had an old edger laying around... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just get a good used 5 HP Briggs. Buy or build a magneto spacer and bolt on a 3 HP Aluminum flywheel. Get a good carb and use your extra money to buy a scatter shield cause you'll be WAAAAYYY over the recomended RPM's for a 5 HP briggs. We used to have racing carts in the stock 5 HP class and that was the cheapest way to make 'em go fast.

I actually did this on an ancient Sears rider... we used it to pull 400-500# logs up out of the woods... way pre-ATV days!

Used crappy steering column type ujoints to drive the flanges... cut the shafts on a duplicate diff, ground them (by hand) to fit the "D" in the joints, welded some plates on the "knuckles" & axle "housing " for a combo of pillowblock & flange bearings. The hardest part was connecting the front axle via chain to the output on the tranny... used a couple of idlers to route the chain under the frame past the engine output.

It actually worked quite well (after I added 200# of old crankshafts to box on the front... to keep the frontend down), but I'm pretty sure despite it's value in the woods, my pappy wasn't happy for the time I spent building it... since he was paying me to clean the shop! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I even recall brazing a couple of pipe fittings into the end of an old cherrybomb that I attached upright "big tractor style" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have drawn up my plans, got the metal stock and a stool.

I'm going with 2wd, 4 link rear, IFS front.
I'm going to use 12" coil-overs front and rear...

Here is my sketch.....

Is it just me, or does suspension seem like a bad idea for a High center of Gravity road racer like this? seems you're going to be more likely to flip it.

Thought about buying an old Go-cart and cutting it down?

well, if you're so smart, then why are you asking us?

I think his point is that he is unemployed and reasonably retarded...therefore, most ideas he has are bad...

Didn't you ever wonder why he ditched the MA1 and got the MA2?

Cuz he was unemployed and bored....

Now that's funny.. If I were drinking milk when I read this, I would be cleaning up my face, computer, and desk....
I also think since the MA2 is, well, umm, broken, and possibly very broken, he had his ADD kick in and needed to have something else to occupy his time before the Dr. Phil and Oprah shows were on.
You do have to give him some credit though, he does finish what he starts....
Albeit, frankenstine looking... it is usually running, but for a short time though.. until he finds out that the "deal" he got on this xyz part, was the core component for this project, and was really junk to begin with... Now, he has to fix this, and the rest of the cobbled up stuff around it..
Aaron, just do what Pat does.... It's cheaper!
seeya...

harbor frieght has some sweet bar-stools for the low low price of 29 dollars!

They don't stock them here anymore. They are internet order only. (I looked on Monday)
Northern tool has a wide selection also...

I'm gonna start this project as soon as I get the engine in the Jeep fixed, one thing at a time...

OK,

The MA-2 is running (for how long... no one knows)

I have been informed by the BSR experts that the rear suspension will not work. If the axle articulates the chain will not stay on. I can do a "swing arm" setup that will give some suspension to the rear without letting the axle articulate. But, then I have to make sure that the convertor sprocket is in axis with the suspension.

So, I'm scrapping the rear suspension all together. I'll just compensate with bigger rubbers.....

I need to come up with a front grill design. I will have to build a shock hoop up front (12" above the front spindles) and I want to incorporate the hoop into a Jeep-ish grill of some sort..... Maybe a rhino style....

If Jill let's me, I'll start welding the frame tomorrow. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/givemebeer.gif
