axle gearing/strength

Is there anything wrong with having 2.73 gears in the axles of my 83 CJ7? The Jeep will have a stock rebuilt chevy 350 and a th350 auto tranny. And the tires will be close to stock (30"). I want to be able to go down the highway at 70 without redlining the engine, so thats why I am planning on keeping the 2.73's. (not to mention the cost of new gears/setup...) So anyway, am I going to have a problem with power on or off road with these gears?? Also what about strength? Thanks in advance

The lower, numerically, the gears, the stronger they are. The actual gears have less teeth, especially the pinion, and this allows for a larger pinion, with more material. A set of 4.56's will have a much smaller pinion than your 2.73's. This has always been my deduction anyway. Plus the lower (numerically) gears allow for less stress after the differential, on axle shafts and the like, but more wear and tear before the differential, like driveshafts, and tranny, etc.

I know someone out there has all the answers to my questions....
So am I going to have no power with these gears??

Shouldn't be a problem with an auto. That's about what mine run.......no problems.
