We are putting together a 78 CJ5 with a 350 with turbo 350, a Dana 20 and Dana 44 front axle and a Ford 9 in the rear. We want to have a spring over suspension. Right now the frame is sitting in the garage with the 9 in under it and we are trying to figure out a mount for the passenger side of the Dana. Before we weld anything else to the tubes we would like know the optimum pinion angle (if there is such a thing) for the outputs of the axles. Any suggestions???

for the rear you have two choices, if you are running single joints on both ends of the drivehshafts then your u-joints should operate at equal but opposite angles, most poeople run the rear axle down an extra degree so that the pinion can rise a bit under load. just to clarify the equal and oppsosite thing, if your front joint makes a 10 degree down angle out of your t-case then the rear one should go up at ten degrees toward the t-case. if you are running a cv-joint at the top of that shaft you point the pinion a degree below straight at the output on the transmission, it is not nesecary to worry about the lower operating angle matching the top because the cv joint cancells the vibrations that would normall be a problem. now for the front you are kinda out of luck, it is way more important to get the caster right than the joint angle setup so unless you are going to cut and weld the tubes to modify that angle you are gonna have to let it sit wherever it happens to end up.
