What would it take to pull out an automatic tranny with 4wd, and put in a manual w/4wd?

Actually, I've been to Temecula...I was there last year for 1 week visiting my son, Chris, who is in the US Marines, then stationed at Camp Pendelton (actually, he is at Pendelton again but he moved to Escondido, so he would be closer to base). The people were nice and friendly and the January weather was warm and welcoming when compared to Philly; snow and cold.

I suppose where this thread is going is that manual vs. automatic transmissions are pretty much a matter of personal preference. What that means is in most cases, modification money and/or labor could be saved by sticking to the type of transmission that the XJ came with. Let's say, if you'd like to rid yourself of one of those crap Puegy trans, for instance, then I think it would be wise to install a AX-15, swapping manual for manual. If your AW-4 goes south, swap in another.

Sometimes I may seem like a wiseguy. But your last post was the point I was trying to make from the begining.

No prob....but it seemed to me that your first post was advocating doing an auto to manual swap because you thought the manual was superior. MyRide's first post suggested that he had an auto and wanted to swap in a manual.

Then you posted the statement about auto vs. manual gear ratios, in which you thought showed the manual superiority and asked for comments. So I gave you my thoughts automantic transmissions gear and crawl ratios.

My last post stated that it may be best to stay with the type of tranny the XJ came with; which seems different than your statement mentioned above.

Don't get me wrong; I still think the auto is the better trans....but it isn't so superior that everybody who has a manual should go out and swap in an auto. It doesn't make sense money and time spent wise. In MyRide's first post, it is written like he wanted to do the opposite.

I didnt think anything of a kind. I just wanted a comparison.

OK I can live with that

Does this mean that I don't have to dig up the article that discussed the advantage of Auto's over manuals? I feel some what vindicated.....

In a nut shell....there is not enough difference in performance to justify the expense and labor of changing over......

This is one thread that might be worth while keeping a note of for the next time the subject comes up.....and it will come up.....

And to reply to the original post, it would take ALOT more money than it is really worth, but if you have the money and your bent on putting a manual into a jeep that currently has an auto, then the basics of what it would take have been touched on here. Just realize that in the long run it's cheaper to buy one with a manual than to mess with changing it.

Thanks for the invite, John!

Do you think Southwest Airlines would allow me to stow my XJ in the overhead???
It is a stock 2 door, afterall.

The one time I ever owned an auto trannie, the only advantage I saw was that my GF, at the time, felt it was easier going down without a shifter in the way.

Oh Oh, this is a family oriented board. It was easier for her to go down town to shop. Yeah, thats what I meant, to shop. He he he he.

(Feel free to delete this post if necesary)

My parents drive a Volvo V70 auto with Diesel engine now. Funny combination...

And going off topic is an underrated skill to my opinion.

And Fixer, I tried to avoid saying my GF likes the stick much better...

He's probably been in the USSR with an auto, been to the springs of the nile with a manual in the same vehicle and crossed the Atlantic with the same cherokee after making it amfibious...

H#((, he probably stood at my door when I was out to work, and decided to have a look in Amsterdam instead...

And Fixer, Yes it's legal to have 5 grams. It's illegal to have more, so how is it sold and stored..? And no, it's not why my answers turn out the way they are. I can do that without the help of any chemical aids...

And to answer the non asked: It's at least 15 years ago since I tried it. When I gained consiousnes again, I couldn't remember anything so endex experiment...

Umkay...........

So yeah I did the swap now have a couple of interesting issues, the biggest being i have no spark. From all the research that I have done one of the few causes of that is the CPS, I have two of them and they both test out at 210 ohms cold when 75 - 200 ohms is normal at running temp. I wired around the neutral safety switch for the auto as well (kinda would bite to have to pop the hood and jumper from the battery to the starter relay each time you want to start it up).

I have been racking my brain for the last two days on this and cannot figure it out. BTW I did a whole motor and tranny swap, not just the tranny and transfer case.

Things I have already done:

Tested the CPS
Checked for input voltage into the cam position sensor aka sync pulse
Disconnected the TCS
Jumpered pins B, & C on the plug for the Neutral Safety switch

Need some input on this one I'm at a loss..........

Did you check the coil? Did you use the connector to plug in the CPS or did you solder it to the wireloom? The connector is many times a cause of troubles. I didn't quite understand what you say about the Neutral safety switch. I know there's info to make that thing work like it should.

Find it here: On-Site XJ Tech Article Index Page

Five days ago, after sitting for over six months the old motor fired right up and drove into the shop like it had never skipped a beat. So the coil should be good I will be testing that today. As far as the neutral safety switch, with the auto harness you have to trick the computer into thinking that it is either in park or neutral so you don't try to start it in gear.

Yeah the CPS is connected thought the harness with the plug. Just that it would seem odd that less than a week would make it have a faulty connection. Also, from the research that I have done, it would seem that the injectors fire in conjunction with the coil. In other words they are tied together sharing the CPS, and the Sync pulse on the distributor.

Thx for the link I'll give that a looksee!!!!

All done with the swap. I had plugged the CPS into the wrong three prong plug by the fuel rail. But anyhow were all up and running and happy again!!! And since the manual jeeps have 3.05 gears and the autos have 3.55 my speedometer seems to be right on with my 285/75's, just maybe 1-2 mph off. Works for me!
